Music Review: Excellent Collection of Roy's Greatest Hits!

I was eyeing this collection for some time and finally decided to pull the trigger and buy the box set thanks to a nice Amazon discount.

All in all I was VERY happy with my purchase. The box set spans the impressive career of one of the most distinctive voices in the history of rock and roll. From his early days with the Teen Kings all the way to his unexpected death at age 52, we get a nice sampling of the songs that made his career. You get a nice variety (and different versions in some cases) of the hits that fans have come to love such as "Ooby Dooby", "In Dreams", "Crying", " Oh, Pretty Woman", to later hits "You Got It" as well as his wonderful Traveling Wilburys standout "Not Alone Anymore" and other notables such as "I Drove All Night" (covered ad nauseum by others, but I still love Roy's version the best) ... Orbison fans and newbies alike will really enjoy the selection offered here.

The packaging is excellent. It features a nice booklet spanning Roy's career ups and downs, and features rare photographs and nice liner notes. It also comes with a few postcards as well. The felt box has a nice feel to it.

Some folks noted that the discs themselves (4 discs in all) were poorly packaged. To some degree I agree. Not because the packaging itself was shoddy, but that the discs were placed in a cardboard jacket and can slip out easily. During shipping (like previous reviewers here mentioned) the discs fell out of the jacket when I opened the box. Luckily my discs were not damaged or scratched but I can see it happening if they weren't handled with care (no Traveling Wilburys pun intended).

Aside from that, this is a totally excellent box set that's worth investing in.

Here is, bar none, the most all-inclusive anthology ever assembled to honor the greatest singer ever considered to be a "Rock and Roll artist." But Roy Kelton Orbison was so much more: behind his ever-present sunglasses and beneath his shock of raven-black hair, clad in black, he was rock's Mystery Man, the possessor of the most glorious voice ever to soar on such signature songs as "Only The Lonely," "In Dreams," "Running Scared," "Crying" and "Oh, Pretty Woman," to cite a mere handful of his Top Ten hits.

As Orbison's widow, Barbara, who is also this collection's Executive Producer, points out in her loving annotation contained in this four-CD package: "For the first time, you will have a chance to hear Roy's first recording to the last time he ever sang--Dec. 4, 1988, in Akron, Ohio. Roy recorded for several different labels [including 15 covered in this 107-song collection] and toured the world many, many times--we have numerous unreleased masters [specifically, 12 in this package] and live performances included in this box set to make it truly special."
