Music Review: Stronger than Ever (and Check Out That Awesome Front Cover Too!)

Rose Royce was QUITE the R&B band in the 70's with seemingly hit after hit after hit. Pigeonholed into the "Disco" category (and unfairly so,) Rose Royce jammed the charts for weeks with the now CLASSIC, "Car Wash" and other strong R&B/Funk contenders such as "I Wanna Get Next to You" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore." Come the end of the 70's, the hits began to wane and after one album on Warner Brothers ("Jump Street,") they were signed to Epic/CBS with "Stronger than Ever," which found them in peak form. Sadly, they were no longer the household name they once were. This album boasted a couple of excellent songs that SHOULD HAVE BEEN hits and sadly were not (except in the U.K.,) which is perplexing in itself, because the vocals as well as the arrangements were spot on. Also here are a couple of nice ballads that are reminiscent of say, Lionel Richie. My favorites include the first single, "Still in Love" which not only features lead singer, Ricci Benson, sangin' her butt off, but that also features one of the most impressive piano solos ever heard in then contemporary R&B. It's BANGIN'! Also noteworthy are the second single, "Best Love," which charted but without much heat (in The States) and "You Blew It," a nice little funk jam similar to anything bands of the day might have done like Skyy or ConFunkShun. The cover art is really, really special with that giant rose coming up from under the pavement and the production, top notch. How this album failed to make an impression on the charts or with the American record buying public remains a mystery, but I would certainly recommend it highly where it so typifies the tight, spirited bounce of the Early 80's Soul/Funk/R&B movement. After 27 years, it's finally available on CD. After this, it took the band four more years to finally score again with the magnificent ballad, "Lonely Road" from their impressive Omni/Atlantic Records debut, "Fresh Cut" in 1986.

Description of Stronger Than Ever
Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1982 album from the Soul/R&B outfit. Stronger Than Ever proves that Rose Royce were certainly plenty strong at this point in their career, working with a tight modern Soul groove on Epic Records, away from their previous placement on the Whitfield label, even though Norman Whitfield's still very actively handling production here. As well as being a hit in the R&B charts the single 'Best Love' made the Top 20 in the Netherlands with the album making the top 30.
