Roles.Rose Bampton ,who substituted for the indisposed Marjory Lawrence sings the tittle role with beautiful commending voice very secure on the top and with considerable brilliance.Her famous scene " Tes destine Sont remplis"with High Priest sang by
Leonard Warren and then the famous aria "Divinites du Styx " sang extremely beautiful ,with great distinction and sacrifice..
The young Leonard Warren in his third season with the Metropolitan opera and at the beginning of a great carrier particularly in the Verdi repertory sings magnificently throughout.His georges baritone voice with an outstanding high tessitura and great breath control is simply amazing.
Rene Maison is more than acceptable as King Admetus,believable and stylish ,but never really distinguished.The smaller parts are
All taken well ,by George Cehanovsky "Herald".Alessio de Paolis "Evandre".and Arthur Kent"Apollon"
Maestro Ettore Panizza leads an excellent chorus and orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera with distinction and authority.
This very spirited and distinguished performance not to be missed by every serious music lover and by admirers of Rose Bampton
And Leonard Warren.
For the new commer I recommend a studio recording of Alceste. In stereo with the great Kirsten Flagstad recorded by Decca.In case if you could not find it the second good choice would be ,Alceste ,w ith Jessye Norman and Nicolai Gedda in an Digital Stereo sound recorded by Orfeo.
