Music Review: chamber music from roscoe mitchell

roscoe mitchell has composed four modern chamber music ensemble pieces. he appears as performer on two of them.
the first piece, nonaah, a title of an ongoing project, is arranged for trio.

after listening to this arrangement i listened to the nonaah performed by the art ensemble of chicago on the recording `fanfare for the warriors'. there's a strong contrast between the two. the fanfare nonaah with brass, drums and piano played hard combines african rhythms, plantation work songs, and free jazz differs from the delicate strains heard in european music rooms of the early twentieth century of mitchell's four compositions nonaah.

mitchell's compositions with voice reminds me much of work by benjamin britten's `illuminations' recording. the lyrics on prelude aren't from the poem by william wordsworth, though they may be from another poem by wordsworth, since buckner, on a later mitchell recording, `pilgrimage', loans his baritone voice to verses from lord byron, e e cummings, and thulani davis.
