Music reviews of Verdi: OtelloMusic Review: Beautiful music, but I wish the lyrics were more understandable Rating: 4 Stars
William Shakespeare's "Othello" is his most brilliant play. A searing psychological thriller about one man's ruination by another, this universal drama explores such relevant themes as racism, jealousy, and obsessive love. Verdi's opera, "Otello," is equally brilliant; setting to music the most fantastic play in human history.
This CD of the complete work is sung in English, and the performers do an excellent job. Charles Craig, (Otello), is excellent, and the singer portraying Iago, the diabolical ensign, is chilling. His credo will horrify you as he stoically expresses his belief that men are food for the worms. However, the real jewel is Rosalind Plowright. Her Desdemona is beautiful and heartbreaking. "Ave Maria" moved me to tears.
My only complaint is that this version, which is sung in English, is difficult to understand. Mind you, I'm not an authority on opera by any means, but if you're going to sing a work in English, shouldn't the lyrics be clearly discernible? Otherwise, why not simply keep the Italian libretto? Thankfully, a booklet is provided with the lyrics which will prove to be a tremendous asset.
Anyway, please give this wonderful musical masterpiece of Verdi's a chance. Happy listening, and God bless you all.
