Music Review: "Rory Gallagher Releases 2 CDs From The Past".
Rating: 4 Stars
The legendary Irish singer-songwriter/guitarist Rory Gallagher has finally released 2 CDs (24 songs) of 'previously unreleased' material together in a 2 CD compilation for the first time, titled 'Notes From San Francisco'. (Some material however has been released in 1978 & as well as bonus tracks in other CDs before but in bits & pieces only). Disc 1 (12 tracks) has previously unreleased studio material recorded in 1977 in San Francisco, California). This great CD opens with the track "Rue The Day" : a great countryish rock track with great vocals & melody. Other great tracks include "Persuasion" (up-tempo rock track with great melody), "B Girl" (bluesy up-tempo track, very melodical & inspiring vocals), "Overnight Bag" (great bluesy guitar & vocals), "Brute Force And Ignorance" (bluesy rock track, great guitar, melody & vocals), "Wheels Within Wheels(alt. version)" (wonderful guitar solo) & "Cut A Dash". Okay tracks are "Cruise On Out" (bluesy up-tempo track) & "Out On The Tiles". Stand-outs/gems/solid tracks include "Mississippi Sheiks" (wonderful rock track with great guitar & melody), "Wheels Within Wheels" (countryish track with incredible Gibson guitar sound) & "Fuel The Fire" (slow-tempo rock track, wonderful melody & great guitar). On overall, this is a great studio album material recorded in 1977 (finally seen the light of the day). I rate this Disc 1 (studio album) 4,5 stars.
Disc 2 (12 tracks) is a live recording of Rory Gallagher at The Waldorf (San Francisco, CA) in 1979. Stand-out/gem/solid track is "Tatto'd Lady" (up-tempo rock track with great vocals & melody). Great tracks include "Follow Me", "Shinkicker" (wonderful guitar & vocals), "Off The Handle", "Bought And Sold", "I'm Leavin'", "Do You Read Me" (great drums), "Country Mile" (great melody & vocals), "Shadow Play", "Bullfrog Blues" (high pitched vocals) & "Sea Cruise". The live performances/recordings could have sounded better (but hey it's 1979) & I rate Disc 2 three and half stars.
In conclusion, this blast from the past material recorded in San Francisco (studio album & live recording) in a 2 CD compilation for the first time, should be a sought after compilation by the legendary Irish singer-songwriter/guitarist Rory Gallagher's loyal fans, a recommended 2 CDs listening.

Description of Notes From San Francisco
In 1977, Rory Gallagher entered a San Francisco studio and recorded a whole album's worth of material. The album was eventually shelved, as Rory explained to a journalist in the early 90's, because "maybe eighty percent of the San Francisco album could come out in some form - remixed. The problem was: the mixing was getting complicated and some of the songs (just didn`t sound right)."For the first time, the recordings from this session will see the light of day on the 2-CD package "Notes From San Francisco". The first disc features the results of this recording session. The version of "Overnight Bag" that appears on here first appeared on the Rory Gallagher "Crest of a Wave" 2-CD compilation (ER201622). The lineup for the studio sessions consists of Rory Gallagher (Guitars / Vocals), Gerry McAvoy (bass), Lou Martin (piano / keyboards), Rod de'Ath (drums), Joe O'Donnell (violin on "Mississippi Sheiks") and Martin Fiero (Saxophone on "Rue The Day" and "Brute Force & Ignorance").
Disc 2 consists of a massively energetic live concert recorded in December of 1979 at The Old Waldorf in San Francisco. The lineup for this show features Rory on guitar & vocals, Gerry McAvoy on bass and Ted McKenna on drums.
