Music Review: Lousy Production Robs Ronnie

If your idea of a good time is hearing some fairly good bluesy rock ruined by awful production, you're going to absolutely love this CD. There's some good material here, and fellow Rolling Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts show up to lend some support but you'd never know it if you listened to this muddy production with your eyes closed.
I was very, very disappointed with this CD for two reasons. First - I'm a fan of Ron Wood's guitar antics going back to the Faces and Rod Stewart. Ronnie is one of the better straightforward slide players to come out of England and the man truly knows how to rock out as well as contribute generous, supporting parts to any song. He's criminally underused in the Stones and I wanted to hear him break out a little here. Second - this is Roy Thomas Baker's worst production, hands down. This is the man who helped make the Cars and Queen into the huge successes they were and yet there's almost nothing here to suggest he had anything to do with this album. It sounds as if everything is EQed exactly the same and mixed at the same volume. Yes, I know Ronnie isn't the prettiest-sounding singer but there are other ways to compensate for this aside from making the album sound as if it were recorded with Radio Shack microphones in a school gym.
This was a very frustrating experience for me and I can't recommend the CD for that reason.
