Music Review: Great Songs On This CD Give It Five Stars

This album deserves five stars from jump because it has THE live version of 'Stand' that showcases Donnie McClurkin in all his unattainable (for me, anyway) glory that most singers (including me) aspire to but cannot reach. Donnie is at his best when given the opportunity to expound without boundaries, as he is at his ad-libbing best on this version that somebody had the wisdom to just leave the tape machine running on. This version of 'Stand' also features a little bit of Marvin Winans at the end, and it is really reason enough to buy the whole project (as I did in 1996). Out of the other twelve tracks, you will find eight that you won't be tempted to skip over, as track 6 ('Totally Dependent On You') and tracks 8 through 10 ('Why Did He Love Me,' 'I Am The One,' and 'That's All There Is') either suffer from poor choir singing or are just flat out boring. 'Totally Dependent...' suffers from what seems to be too many words in the chorus, as the choir seems to lag behind the music a little, which makes the song a chore to listen to. 'Why Did He Love Me' is kind of boring. 'I Am The One' seems, much like 'Totally...,' as a little more than the choir could digest. I don't even remember 'That's All There Is,' so that's how much I didn't like it. While the first two tracks ('I Just Wanna Please Jesus' and 'All In Your Name') are OK, the album really doesn't start cooking until 'Don't Let Go,' which is a song of good quality, but not one of the best on this album. 'I'll Go,' a CeCe Winans song, is easily one of the three best on the album, and 'I Can Hardly Wait' is serviceable and enjoyable. 'But God' is also easily one of the three best and, if 'Stand' wasn't such a song of mythical proportions and quality, would probably beat out 'I'll Go' as the best on this album, although a really strong case could be made for each. 'You May Have Heard It Before' and 'Everything God Has Promised He Will Do,' both quality offerings that were done well (although I still can't tell you most of what the choir says in 'Everything God Has Promised...' and that song's words aren't listed in the CD along with the other ones, which I absolutely HATE), round out this album. In retrospect, this album was one of my favorites of all time, but the fact that there are songs on the CD that I skip over has cooled my enthusiasm for it over the years. This is an album that has parts that are greater than the sum, but the three great ones end up making this album a much better listen than most.
