Music Review: Sexsmith"s Pop Gems Again

The man not only can't make a bad album, that goes without saying, but he also delivers gems, if not full albums, every time out.
Time Being is no exception. "Snow Angel," the amazing "The Grim Trucker", or "Reason Fort Our Love"--the latter a reminder of the best of Blue Boy--are beauties. More than anyone else is the spirit of McCartney that reigns over these tunes without ever implying than Sexsmith is his own man as a writer. Think of a lineage like Lindsey Cunninghan's debt to Brian Wilson. "Cold Hearted Wind" and also "Jazz At The Bookstore" worth mentioning.
Time Being may not take Ron Sexsmith to a new musical dimension but it is solid. There's more good music here than many of his contemporaries and peers may be able to claim.

8th full length album from the Canadian star. 'Time Being' sees Ron reunited with legendary producer Mitchell Froom (Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, The Corrs, Crowded House, Daniel Powter) who produced Ron's first three albums for Interscope. 12 tracks in all. V2. 2006.Canadian Ron Sexsmith, though never able to crack the pop-star ceiling in America, has managed to linger as a critics' darling and stay beloved among his peers since his 1995 debut. The boyish quiver so prominent in his voice during the middle '90s has matured on his eighth record, as Sexsmith reenlists his first producer, Mitchell Froom, to watch over his most introspective album to date. Never lacking for candid, hook-driven life observances, the Toronto native punches out melodies that could chill the spines of Ray Davies ("Ship of Fools"), Brian Wilson ("Snow Angel"), and Paul McCartney ("The Grim Trucker"), the latter juxtaposing an infectious chorus with pigs heading to the slaughterhouse. Like a balladeering novelist reading over complementary guitars and piano, Sexsmith carves out vignettes that can be as topically witty ("Jazz at the Bookstore") as they are hit-in-the-gut poignant ("Cold Hearted Wind"). It's an unabashed flair that makes his lacking listenership a mystery as Ron Sexsmith remains a pop music vanguard. --Scott Holter
