Music Review: A Fine Mix of Paris & Manhattan

Although Carter's & Galliano's highly individual playing styles are sometimes a case of mixing chalk & cheese, this is always an interesting and unique disc. If you're interested in an uncompromising alternative to some of Galliano's softer sounding arrangements, this album is for you. Personally, not coming from a Jazz background, there were times I've found it a bit too stark. Mind you, a jazz musician friend, who listened to this album, said he found it to be an amazing album.

Ron Carter needs no introduction, suffice to say he is one of the most diverse Jazz players around, being well versed with anything from Miles Davis (with whom he recorded) to Jobim. He's also a prolific composer, whose work span more than 40 years.

Richard Galliano is now known for being not only the greatest Accordion player of our time, but also for having a highly individualistic style of composition. Here, he proves he can muster American Jazz.

One of the great attributes of this album is the clarity of the recording. This, combined with Carter's and Galliano's unparalleled abilities, makes listening to this album a real treat. You get the sense of being there - at the concert, without any compromises.

There's also a nice booklet accompanying the album, which tries to explain who come 7 of the 9 pieces on this Jazz album are in 3/4... a rare occasion indeed...
