On Membran Music 224102; 2 CD's; This performance of "Butterfly" is among the best ever recorded. All the singers are in stunning, fresh voice. De Los Angeles is a magnificent, moving, touching Butterfly. Di Stefano is at his most fresh, youthful, and smooth as the thoughtless Pinkerton, while Gobbi is strong and firm, yet sensitive as Sharpless. Anna Maria Canali is a strong Suzuki. The supporting roles are all well sung, with Renato Ercolani a lyrical Goro. Gianandrea Gavazzeni leads a brisk, deeply involving performance, very much in keeping with Puccini's tempi and expectations rather than the overly lush and languid sentimentalism which has dominated this opera in recent times. This performance will engage the listener completely as it moves towards its hopeless, inexorable conclusion. "Opera News" writes of "Victoria de los Angeles, a Cio-Cio-San of endearing radiance" and of the "idiomatic conducting of Gianandrea Gavazzeni and superlative performances by Giuseppe di Stefano (Pinkerton) and Tito Gobbi (Sharpless)." Also "Gramophone" writes that "vitality is the chief characteristic of Gavazzeni's flowingly dramatic conducting of Butterfly. Di Stefano is a swaggering, impassioned Pinkerton, who makes you love and hate him at the same time, Gobbi a highly articulate and sympathetic Sharpless. As for de los Angeles, we have her detailed, sincere, glowingly sung Cio-Cio-San. When the Spanish soprano sings 'Butterfly, rinegato - e felice' or 'Che tua madre', or practically anything else, with such honest conviction, such pointed diction, such natural phrasing, wonderfully supported by Gavazzeni and his Rome Opera Orchestra, the hardest heart must surely melt and no other Butterfly comes into it. Here's singing and artistry of a rare distinction, an interpretation no Puccini collection should be without."
