Music Review: A gift to Roky fans

Like most Roky Erickson fans, I've been eagerly awaiting this release, particularly in light of the many glowing advance reviews it received. These 12 (mostly) new recordings are certainly a gift to fans who thought we'd never hear new music again from Roky. And there are some gems here. The second half (side 2 of the LP) is particularly strong -- the run from the title track through Birds'd Crash is as great as I'd hoped it all would be.
As ungracious as it may be to look a gift horse in the mouth, however, there is some disappointment here. Sad to say, but listening to this album, you can hear that Roky is not as engaged with the creation and the recording process as you might have hoped. It's pretty clear that the musicians worked around the best vocal takes they could get from Roky. For example, John Lawman, a menacing rocker previously released in a lo-fi live version, has a cut-and-paste sound, like Roky might have sang his very few lines in several sessions rather than a "live" take. And two of the 12 tracks aren't much more than lo-fi 40-year-old cassette recordings that producer Will Sheff overdubbed with audio-verite noise inspired by the documentary about Roky's recovery from untreated schizophrenia, You're Gonna Miss Me. Those have received positive comment in the reviews but they come off as gimmicky and even a little insulting to Roky -- and they don't work as sonic art either.
