Music reviews of Radio Kaos

Music Review: A Highly Underrated Gem - Fantastic!
Rating: 5 Stars

I'm really surprised to see the negative reviews of this album, as I feel that this album is musically very strong.

Granted it sounds different than Roger's normal work, and perhaps thats why some diehard fans (hey, I'm a diehard too) can't get into it.

But I say listen to this with an open mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Roger Waters is well known for his contributions to Pink Floyd and his solo work that were, much of the time, cynical, biting, deep lyrically and make you think. Plus the electronic voice of Billy (the vegetable kid who hears radio waves in his head) adds an entertaining and unique element to the music. Billy is a story in itself...you need to read the CD booklet and then listen to what he has to say between songs.

Radio KAOS deals with political themes which Roger does best, however here he takes a different approach than the cynicism we are all used to. Radio KAOS is filled with upbeat, catchy music that slips in the political themes without completely beating one over the head with it. In short, the album is rather uplifting, enjoyable, and definitely something to play for your friends.

Yes, the album does sound very 80s...but, its not as dated sounding as people are saying. It has great production values, and does not suffer from the sonic shallowness that so many albums of the 80s suffered from in production. It simply sounds great.

Considering the quality of the music on this album I find it hard to believe that it didn't produce radio hits, it definitely could have. Radio Waves is a typical 80s-sounding Top 40-ish song...but a much superior track is Who Needs Information....this song grabs your attention, has a FANTASTIC chorus, memorable lyrics...powerful singing....all around a song that could have, should have, been a hit with the public and fans alike.

Me or Him takes a few listens to get into, but the roger duets with himself on this track is definitely interesting. (Roger's whispered singing at the forefront, but yelling in the background)

The Powers That Be is yet another excellent 80s song, very upbeat and of course going after the political figures of the day in humourous fashion. Another reviewer here posted lyrics to this song, worth a read, its a funny track and has accompanying vocals of Mike and the Mechanics' Paul Carrack (Remember Silent Running or The Living Years? Yeah, that guy.) His vocals enhance the music and add a nice new element to the song. And this one has excellent bass, worth playing in your car's stereo system.

Sunset Strip, to me, is the weakest track on the album. To be honest I skip it every time...but, its not that bad of a song, I just don't like it.

Home, while lyrically weak, is forceful musically, fantastic to listen to, once again excellent bass. I was playing this track at my work the other day and had customers asking me what they were listening to, and moreso...where they could BUY it.

Don't believe these negative reviews, in my experience of playing this in public, people really like it and you would too I bet.

The last two tracks on the album don't really fit the same musical mood as the rest, its almost as if Roger ran out of song material to use, as Radio KAOS is a rather short album, only 41 minutes long, and the last two songs seem rushed....despite that though, Four Minutes is an okay bridge piece to the final track, and the final track, dealing with Live Aid, is uplifting and hopeful, despite being quite out of place on this album.

To me the album "properly" ends at Home.

A long review perhaps, but I had to be the one to stick up for this album. I've never regretted my purchase and I'm one of the biggest floyd fans out there, having every single Pink Floyd release, and owning all of the Waters albums, this one is very good, catchy, enjoyable, and worth every cent you pay for it.

And that, fellow Floydians, is my two cents.
