Music Review: THIS REFRESHMENT GOES DOWN REAL GOOOOOOD!

Roger Clyne's old band the Refreshments were in my humble opinion, the best band of the 90's. They mixed their tasty rock and roll a little twang and the dead on good humour of the Kinks. They also wrote some unforgettable songs, thanks primarily to the pen of lead singer Roger Clyne. But after 2 great albums, the Refreshments quielty disappeared without so much as a whimper. In fact, I didn't know they had disbanded until I recently saw this Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers CD on the shelves. My curiosity got the best of me and I got this. But I lowered the bar on expecting this to be like a new Refreshments album, especially since this was Clyne without his very gifted lead guitar player Brian Blush, who I thought was the backbone of the Refreshment sound. Well...After a few months and listening to this for the umpteenth time, all I have is 2 words. Refreshingly delicious! I haven't heard anything this good, that appeals to my left of center musical tastes this much, in a long long time. Brilliant songwriting abounds here. And Roger Clyne hasn't lost a bit of his great since of humour, and the ability to storytell within a song. Which is something usually reserved for folk artists, but is unique with rock and roll bands. Clyne's storytelling has always been what has made his music endearing. Both with his time with the Refreshments and now the Peacemakers. "Beautiful Disaster" opens the album and sets the tone for the rest of the way with a much more country rock sound that I was expecting. In fact I would call the title track "Honky Tonk Union" and "My Heart Is A UFO almost pure country. The songs "Easy", "Green and Dumb", and "Never Thought" are some of the most singable songs I've ever heard. Everything here is memorable. In fact, this a perfect soundtrack for a backwoods truckride down a dusty dirt road on a 100 degree day with the windows rolled down and this CD blaring out full blast from the $10 K-Mart speakers. It doesn't seem to matter what band Roger Clyne chooses to have, it's all good. Move over just a little Steve Earle. Ya gotta new kid in town, and he's a Peacemaker with a poison pen that lays down some highly recommended country rock!
