Music Reviews of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (The New Broadway Cast)Music Review: An Outstanding South Pacific Rating: 5 Stars
Having not heard the original cast recording much, I cannot compare the two extensively. However, this recording is simply superb. It cannot capture the full glory of the original performance, but it packs the emotional punch of the performances from O'Hara, Szot, and the rest. If you want to hear lighter voices than those of Pinza and Martin, or if you want to hear a new recording of old favorites, this is a great recording.
Music Review: It's about time! Rating: 5 Stars
It's about time that we can take in a quality show with great music, outstanding cast AND a full orchestra! We have that and more with the current revival of "South Pacific" and this recording. To hear this orchestra performing Robert Russell Bennett's original orchestrations is alone worth the price of a ticket...and this CD. If you want to hear American Musical Theater at its best, this is the recording to own.
Music Review: South Pacific (new Broadway cast) Rating: 5 Stars
I bought the CD because I was going to see the play. Both were wonderful. I think they are better than the original. Kelli Ohara not only has a perfect voice but is a terrific actress and you can hear that on the CD. All of the others are fabulous also. The only one not quite as good as the original was Bloody Mary, but I think they were trying to make her less of a caricature and they did succeed in that.
Music Review: wonderful music Rating: 5 Stars
The new producion of South Pacific at Lincoln Center is wonderful. The music has you singing long after the play is finished. The songs are wonderful. I have the CD in my car and have many enjoyable times listening to it. If you visit Broadway, you must have this recording. Musical theater is not to be missed. The new ingenue, Kelly Ohara is wonderful. She has a lovely voice.
Music Review: Inexplicably insipid recording Rating: 2 Stars
I saw this show in New York on 5/23/08, and it was perfection. Nothing less. But you would never know it from this album. Were they singing to an empty theater? Was this recorded after just a few weeks in rehearsal? I was hoping for a souvenir of a thrilling evening, but this isn't it. Only the sailors come through with energy and style, and sometimes Bloody Mary.
