Music reviews of Unplugged...and Seated (Collector's Edition - CD and DVD)

Music Review: A long-overdue return to form
Rating: 4 Stars

In the early-to-mid-1970s, Rod Stewart was signed to Warner Brothers with The Faces and Mercury as a solo artist. As such, he ping-ponged between labels to meet his contractual obligations, but they were all essentially Stewart-Wood-McLagen-Lane-Jones productions. That body of work...from "The Rod Stewart Album" (1969) to "Smiler" (1974) and "First Step" (1970) to "Ooh La La" (1973) represents 11 of the strongest "Hall of Fame"-worthy albums ever released. The live Faces album, Coast to Coast - Overtures and Beginners was a kiss-off delivered by a long-depleted band. Lane had since departed, and former Free bassist Tetsu Yamauchi gamely filled in as they limped to the finish line. The album featured four unquestionably strong cover songs...Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now," Jimi Hendrix's "Angel," The Temptations' "I Wish It Would Rain" and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy"...but the performances lacked any genuine heat.

Within short order, Stewart made the leap to full-time solo artist, minus his Faces band mates. Some would also say he sold out...songs like "Hot Legs" attempted to capture some of the old Stones-y Chuck Berry feel of prime Faces, but just came across as leering and smarmy, typical "rock star conquers all" tripe. Yes, that element was also at the center of several Faces songs...especially "Stay With Me" and "Miss Judy's Farm" from Faces: A Nod Is As Good As a Wink...to a Blind Horse, but what began as a good-natured "boys will be boys" commentary on the "band-meets-groupie" phenomenon soon wore thin. Frank Zappa walked the same turf on his albums Fillmore East: June 1971 and Joe's Garage: Acts I, II & III, with the difference being the depiction of the rock star as juvenile and detached rather than conquering and heroic. Stewart essentially lived up to Fee Waybill's "Quay Lude" fake rock star cartoon in real life.

The ultimate insult..."D'ya Think I'm Sexy"...is the one that had most die-hard fans yelling "traitor!"

But the records still sold, Stewart still worked the concert trail, and life went on. He had the hair, he had the clothes, he just lacked the heart of his earlier days, and the material ranged from acceptable to weak.

Then came "Unplugged." The reason I've rated it at four starts instead of five is that Stewart still insisted on "stunt casting"...at the end of "Handbags & Gladrags," the third track, Wood is introduced, and the crowd goes wild. What would have made it a five-star show? Wood on every song, for starters, and exclusive Faces-era material, rather than tracks like "Hot Legs." And while Stewart performed admirably on the 1985 version of "People Get Ready" from Jeff Beck's Flash album, the strength of that version was based on it being an equal showcase for Stewart's voice and Beck's guitar. Cutting that equation in half makes it a bit pointless.

The single greatest moment of the show is when Wood recreates his original guitar solo from "Maggie Mae"...there's the missing heart. There's the thing that's missing from all of the "Great American Songbook" experiments.

Stewart has reunited with Wood on occasion since this concert, and there is a constant "on again, off again" rumor of a Faces reunion (impossible in the wake of Ronnie Lane's passing, but Stewart-Wood-McLagen-Jones will still sell out every stadium it touches).

Poetic justice at its finest...just like Jo Jo, Rod "got back to where he once belonged." True fans of the Faces-era Stewart & Wood should also check out the excellent, essential box set Five Guys Walk into a Bar....

Description of Unplugged...and Seated (Collector's Edition - CD and DVD)

Deluxe CD/DVD Collector's Edition of the legendary singer's 1993 MTV Unplugged performance features bonus audio plus the original broadcast on DVD for the first time ever.
This low-key 1993 live retrospective marked something of a return to form for Rod the Mod, who for many years had more or less abdicated his position as a performer of consequence to pursue a more frivolous pop-star persona. With his former Faces bandmate Ron Wood in tow, Stewart revisits hits like "Hot Legs," "Tonight's the Night," and "Maggie May"--and more adventurous choices like Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Tom Waits's "Tom Traubert's Blues"--with an effortless grace and a renewed expressiveness that makes Unplugged ... And Seated a consistent pleasure. --Scott Schinder
