Music Review: Rod's Crooner Days

When it has came down to Rod Stewart, he has honestly been one of the most iconic, and most influential voice of the past 40 years. On his own, and as a part of The Faces, he delivered some of the strongest songs that've still remained as iconic as the soulful singer. But the past decade, Rod has gone from soulful blue-eyed soul singer, to crooner of the last decade. While it has won his a lot of new fans all over the world, it has unfortunately lost a bit of its luster in what had made Rod Stewart so iconic all these years. While it has nearly been 10 years since Rod Stewart unveiled The Great American Songbook series, and now a new hits collection of Rod's crooner era is finally here. But is it honestly worth the money? Well, not definitively yes and no.
The Best Of The Great American Songbook, is a noble reflection of Rod's 5 volumes of The Great American Songbook series from 2002-2010, without the offshoot records, 2009's Soulbook & 2006's Still The Same albums. There are some of Rod's best songs from the series here including Time After Time, The intimate The Way You Look Tonight, What A Wonderful World with Stevie Wonder on the harmonica, and These Foolish Things to name a few. While there are a lot of good standards here, there honestly is still a lot that could've been covered from his classic duets with Diana Ross of I've Got A Crush On You from Volume IV, and Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered with Cher from The Great American Songbook Volume II, to some of his recent covers including Frank Sinatra's I've Got You Under My Skin, and a classy rendition of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Track Of My Tears. I just felt there were a lot of good songs that should've been showcased, but yet missed being iconic.
All in all, Rod Stewart's The Best Of The Great American Songbook isn't a bad sampler of what made Rod Stewart transform himself brilliantly the past several years, but honestly not enough to make the collection collectively a better buy than all the five Great American Songbook Volumes seperately drive as one. While I have grown with Rod going a customed to his crooner ways, I just felt that there should've been more to follow for die hard fans who've missed what made Rod Stewart so good with covers in the first place.
