Music Reviews of It Had to Be You... The Great American SongbookMusic Review: IT HAD TO BE ANYONE ELSE. Rating: 2 Stars
The arrangements of these old standards are very well done, but not so much better than your average karaoke cds are. The flaw of course is the vocals by Rod Stewart, whose one melifluously hoarse voice croaks and has difficulty with the phrasings. It's obvious they had to fly in a lot of parts because he just doesn't have the wind necessary to get thru these tunes and the result is a very uneven vocal performance. It's hard to say when someone should give up the craft they love and so many have stayed at the party too long and have suffered ridicule for it. Warner tried to give him hints thru years of trite material and when he wouldn't take it they had to dump him. Not everyone can cruise thru their old age crooning along as Sinatra did and Bennett does and Manilow seems destined to. If you're a lifelong fan of Rod's, you'll really feel for him as you listen to him strain thru these refrains, but mostly you'll wonder why the Peacock of Rock is warbling thru this material in the first place. In honor of Rod, I'll pull out my BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN Album and crank it up.
Music Review: Why Did It Have to Be You? Rating: 1 Stars
I was subjected to this God-awful CD over Christmas dinner and even my teenaged daughter wondered who was butchering these usually-terrific songs. I'm a fan of most of Rod's music over the years and an even bigger fan of these classic American standards... however, this CD proves they're not good bedfellows (if you'll pardon the unfortunate pun). Perhaps it will grow on me, but I doubt it. The arrangements are what carry this CD and make it listenable. If you're new to this music and like what you hear on this CD, do yourself a TREMENDOUS favor and acquire the original recordings from the artists that God intended to sing this music: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, etc. Otherwise, it's equivelent to only hearing Mariah Carey & Michael Bolton remakes, without the privilege of ever experiencing the originals. To be fair, I didn't much care for Sinatra's versions of pop songs that were painfully too hip for his talents. What's next? Ja-Rule does Lawrence Welk? Rod, you rock! Croon, you do not.
Music Review: Warm, Whiskey, Mellow Memories Rating: 5 Stars
I for one find this Cd most enjoyable and relaxing.. The songs evoke such wonderful memories in my soul. Yes, you hear the weary, time-worn, and whiskey tinged vocals of Rod...but I think that is what makes this CD so wonderful. it wouldn't have worked when Rod was younger... as the very songs themselves lend to lost loves, longings, beautiful memories, you can just picture Rod sitting there remembering his lost loves and longings. When he sings "The Very Thought of You" and "Nearness of You" --I feel the hunger and longing, sexuality and that is exactly what the songwriters wanted you to feel when they wrote these songs and Rod successfully interprets that---If I can feel that..then I say the CD works!!!..I play those two songs over & over again.. I am so glad that Rod finally did this and can't wait to hear his new CD that is supposed to be more of the same. I hope more singers take the hint and do some CDs like this --and maybe, just maybe we can instill appreciation of this music in the younger generations to come after us.
Music Review: I love this CD Rating: 5 Stars
I Love this Cd.. But then again I have been a big fan of all Rod Stewart's work for many years... I have heard these songs song by other singers before, but there is something about the way that Stewart sings them, not that his voice is prefect, but he pulls this off really well. This is a romantic Cd, so if you want to put a Partner in the mood, this is it! If you want to score some points with a special person, this is a great gift to give .. My Husband even likes this Cd, although its certainly not his favorite... I would really like to see Rod Stewart do more Romantic Cd's like this one. He picked some really good songs to sing here, I like them all... I Don't think you can compare this to other singers that have song these songs before, as Rod Stewart has a style all his own. Just have to say, its one of my favorite CD's, and if you like Rod Stewart,or this type of music, then you will like this CD also.. Buy it , Ya'll like it...
Music Review: The most romantic album of 2002 Rating: 5 Stars
No, this isn't Smiler, Gasoline Alley, Every Picture Tells A Story, or even Vagabond Heart or Human. This is a mature Rod Stewart who has reached back into his youth for songs that those of us who began listening to him when he was with the Faces have never heard before. It's a different kind of song, sad and romantic at the same time, especially when taken in the context of World War II.Releasing this album was a very shrewd move on Stewart's part. His music has cut across the generations his entire career (ever notice the age range of the audience at his concerts?) and with It Had To Be You he has picked up yet another generation of listeners. I gave this album to my 86 year old aunt for Christmas; she'd heard his name before, but didn't know any of his work. Her response to It Had To Be You is that it makes her want to get up and dance around the living room. And he has a lovely voice, too. I agree with her completely. As much as I like his rock 'n' roll, this may be the best album Stewart has recorded to date.
