Music reviews of How To Become Clairvoyant

Music Review: What a great album!
Rating: 5 Stars

Robbie is infamous for making us wait a very long time between albums. But, once again, the wait was well worth it. I pre-ordered the CD when it was first announced. And when a few songs were available on reverbnation, I listened to them. Then NPR let us hear the whole album before it was out and I got hooked. Now that my CD is here, the songs are ripped and ready to travel with me. iTunes took care of the iPod (I also had trouble getting the CD ripped onto it). I even ordered (but haven't yet received) the "Best Buy only" double CD with extra tunes on it. Looking forward to hearing the extra songs.

Of course, any CD with Robbie, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood is likely to be great. This one is. Robbie has a great ability to cast musicians on his songs like a really great movie is cast, choosing just the right person and instrument for each song. Amazing sounds on this album. We've come to expect that from Robbie from his first solo album, "Robbie Robertson," through "Storyville," "Music for the Native Americans," and "Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy."

Lyrically and musically, Robbie hasn't lost a thing. He moved me to tears on "She's Not Mine" and "Won't Be Back Again." "When the Night Was Young" made me start thinking about the 60s and 70s and how we've changed since then. "Straight Down the Line" is another one that made me a little nostalgic. "He Don't Live Here No More" is the story of those who went through the excessive drugs and drinking and somehow came out the other side intact; lots didn't, but Robbie and Eric Clapton did. "Right Mistake" was the title that really intrigued me and the song does as well. "This is Where I Get Off" is filled with emotion, regret and hope; leaving The Band took a lot of courage, but it had to happen for Robbie. "Fear of Falling" - ah, I think this is my favorite song on the album. Robbie and Eric trade vocals and guitar licks and create a beautifully simple song that has depths to discover. "Axman" was the most difficult one for me to get into, but the guitar sound was so funky (made me think of Jimi Hendrix) that it drew me in. The two instrumentals, "Madam X" and "Tango for Django" are gems that some people might overlook because they're instrumentals. It's a mistake you don't want to make. "Django" is cinematic (as several people already commented) and "Madam X" flows like a musical blanket, wrapping you in warmth and emotion.

This album, like the earlier ones, is going to live on my iPod and computer and external drives a long time. I've had it playing while writing this review and the emotion holds up, even after multiple listenings. If you're a fan of Robbie or The Band, you don't want to miss this one. If somehow you've never found them, this is the perfect place to do so. You'll end up buying all the previous albums, and probably all of Clapton's as well.

Description of How To Become Clairvoyant

Named one of Rolling Stone s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Robbie Robertson sets to release, How To Become Clairvoyant, his fifth solo album and his first record in more than 10 years. Guitar virtuosos Eric Clapton (who co-wrote three tracks with Robertson), Tom Morello and Robert Randolph guest on the album, which Robertson co-produced with Marius de Vries. How To Become Clairvoyant also features Steve Winwood and Trent Reznor as well as vocalists Angela McCluskey, Rocco Deluca, Dana Glover and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. Bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Ian Thomas lay down the groove throughout.

On his last two albums Robertson explored his ancestry. Now, with How To Become Clairvoyant, he takes on his rock heritage, delivering his first-ever song about leaving The Band, the evocative This Is Where I Get Off. What is lost? What is missing? Robertson asks on When The Night Was Young, a poignant reflection on youthful idealism. We could change the world/stop the war...but that was back when the night was young.

The smoldering Straight Down The Line is a sly nod to rock n roll s early reputation as the Devil s music, while the blistering He Don t Live Here No More is a song about excess. The latter features Clapton on harmony vocal and electric and slide guitars alongside Robertson s soulful gut string guitar solo.

Robertson was a founding member of The Band, penning such classic songs as The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek. The Band s 1976 farewell concert was documented by director Martin Scorsese in the film The Last Waltz and the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In addition to his acclaimed solo albums, Robertson also has a long list of film credits. As Executive Soundtrack Producer for 1996 s Phenomenon, he recruited Clapton to perform Change the World, which subsequently won GRAMMY® awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. He has collaborated with Scorsese on numerous films, including Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Casino, Gangs of New York and Shutter Island.
