Music Review: An album of courage

I first heard this CD in the mid 90s on public radio and it haunted me. Over ten years later, this album has undoubtedly captured my heart, forever. It is mystical, but not about denial phyisical. Indeed, the music blurs the line between the physical and metaphysical. The music faces the fearsom truth of allowing suffering to speak. Robertson's band does this articulation at a level that is beyond good or bad, but at a level of transcendence. The production isn't crisp, but this adds a bit to its timelessness. To this day, I still listen to the "Ghost Dance" and "Vanishing Breed". Many of these tunes will first strike your novelty, as something exotic, something fascinating. Then when the lyrics sink in one realizes that he/she is listening to an anthem of rekindled peoples. I can't help but invoke Cornell West's advice that all philosophers need to go to school with musicians. My spirit goes out to Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble...

Commissioned to come up with a soundtrack for the 1994 Turner Network Television special The Native Americans, Robbie Robertson delivered some of his most haunting and evocative work to date. Combining the sleek atmospherics of 1991's Storyville with traditional tribal chanting and instrumentation, Music for the Native Americans often manages to sound both contemporary and timeless. Unfortunately, Robertson's lyrics are often as clunky as they are well intentioned--though brief, his liner notes are far more powerful and informative--and his gravelly speak-singing is consistently outclassed by Native American guest vocalists Pura Fe, Soni, and Jen, whose "Mahk Jchi (Heartbeat Drum Song)" is also the album's highlight.
