Music reviews of Past, Present & Future [w/ Bonus DVD]

Music Review: Not the greatest, and not all hits either...
Rating: 3 Stars

Rob Zombie's first (and likely) only 'greatest hits' compilation features 19 tracks spanning from 1992-2003, and 10 music videos from '92-'01. This review is going to be very hard for me to write, mainly because I love the idea of a compilation of Zombie songs and videos all in one $15 package, but also because this album has potential at being a big dissappointment. I should also mention, the reason Rob Zombie released a 'best of' compilation so early (11 years mainstream with 4 original albums and a handful of soundtrack releases isn't worthy enough for a compilation album, in my opnion), is because he is planning on abandoning music for a full-time career in movies, he's even fired his band this year.

I've been a Rob Zombie fan since the age of 11 in 1996, with the release of White Zombie's cover of "I'm Your Boogieman" (originally a disco song by KC & The Sunshine Band) on The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack.

This album, to be honest, is a mixed bag. As stated above, it features 19 tracks sung by Rob Zombie, and 10 music videos. But in all honesty, this compilation feels a bit of a throw-together. For one, a few songs are noticabley absent from the compilation, both on the CD and the DVD. But I'll get to that later. Onto individual track reviews...

01: "Thunderkiss '65" (White Zombie) - Zombie's first hit from White Zombie's first mainstream release, this song is actually about his own birth. It's a nice rockin' song, it's got that oldschool rockish groove to it.

02: "Black Sunshine" (White Zombie featuring Iggy Pop) - This song... I don't know. Many fans consider it to be one of his best, likely why it's on this album, but it just doesn't do it for me. I find this song quite bland and just uninteresting.

03: "Feed The Gods" (White Zombie) - A rare White Zombie track from the Airhead's soundtrack. This song decent, I wouldn't say one of the best, but it's a nice filler-track anyway.

04: "More Human Than Human" (White Zombie) - Probably WZ's most popular track, it's good, a bit over-rated, but good none the less. From their second mainstream release.

05: "Super-Charger Heaven" (White Zombie) - Also from WZ's second release. This was another popular track of theirs... But again, it just didn't do it for me.

06: "I'm Your Boogieman" (White Zombie, KC & The Sunshine Band cover) - A cover, of a disco track oddly enough. This is another soundtrack rarity from The Crow City of Angels. This was the track that got me into Zombie in the first place. One of the highlights of this album.

07: "Hands of Death, Burn Baby Burn" (featuring Alice Cooper) - From the X-Files TV soundtrack... This song... I dunno, it's just, strange. I don't like it.

08: "The Great American Nightmare" (fearturing Howard Stern) - From the Private Parts soundtrack, a great, and I mean, GREAT song. It was one of his first solo tracks.

09: "Dragula" - If you don't know this song... You've really been living under a rock. This is probably one of the most over-played, if not THE most over-played song of the late 90's. It's still good though.

10: "Living Dead Girl" - Same as above, over-played, and from his first solo-release. Good song, but I feel it's over-rated.

11: "Superbeast" - This is, what I consider to be Rob Zombie's best song from his first solo effort.

12: "Feel So Numb" - This was the first single from his second solo album, meaning it's only a couple years old. It's a great song, and one of the best from his second album.

13: "Never Gonna Stop, the red, red kroovy" - Rob wrote this as a tribute to the film A Clockwork Orange. It's also from his second solo release. A good song, but a bit mellow compared to what he usually does.

14: "Demon Speeding" - A heavy enough song, but also featuring a 30-piece orchestra. Again, from his second solo release, it's a good song, but not great.

15: "Birckhouse 2003" (featuring Lionel Richie & Trina, Commadores cover) - Another cover from Zombie, this time of a classic funk track. This song was used at the end of his feature film House of 1000 Corpses, and features original vocalist Lionel Richie and rapper Trina. It starts off as a decent enough song, but the rap section really kills it.

16: "P**** Liquor" - This song basically describe the family in House of 1000 Corpses, and like the above track, it's from the film. It's good, this version cuts out the intro quotre from the film.

17: "Blitzkrieg Bop" (Ramones cover) - Another cover, this time of the classic Ramones punk anthem. It is my personal opinion that Rob's cover tops the original, and that's saying alot.

18: "Two-Lane Blacktop" - This is a new track to this album. It was recorded in July 2003, and was originally a cut track from Rob's second solo album. It's a good enough song, nothing special, it sounds vaguely like a Bon Jovi-style song.

19: "Girl On Fire" - Same as above, but this seems more like Zombie-1998 style. It's a good song, but again, not great.

Onto the DVD... The DVD features 10 music videos from Rob Zombie's career, and although I have no real complaints about what's on the DVD, I wish there was more. For one, especially the video for "I'm Your Boogieman". But for what's on there, I'd say the highlights are "Dragula", "Never Gonna Stop" (which now has the clips from the film Rollarball edited out), and the newly-released "Return of The Phantom Stranger" video. The DVD features three unreleased videos from the Hellbilly Deluxe album.

Overall, This compilation isn't spectacular, but it's not horrible either. It would have been much better if it had featured the Dragula Remix (which was more popular than the Hellbilly Deluxe version), Welcome To Planet Motherf***er (the best track from White Zombie's first mainstream release), and White Zombie's cover of "Children of The Grave" (originally by Black Sabbath). I give this release 3.5/5 stars.
