Music reviews of Hellbilly Deluxe 2

Music Review: UNDERCOOKED AND EGO-DRIVEN
Rating: 1 Stars

I'm a solo Zombie fan. I'll throw that out now. I appreciate a good hook, pop structure and a good hard-hitting groove. I never could fully appreciate much of the White Zombie material until the remix album came out (Supersexy Swingin' Sounds)Up until that point, I just saw White Zombie as mediocre metal, re-hashing Misfits-lyrics with an egotistical front man.

The original Hellbilly Deluxe changed my life in High School. I could never understand what about it made me want to screw chicks, and beat people up at the same time. What was in Rob Zombie's music that made me want to dance and mosh at the same time? It was the subliminal electro/industrial that ran through the original Hellbilly and its sequel The Sinister Urge. Go back and listen to those 2 albums and you'll notice just how thick the programming really is - and it beefs the music up and sets the tones light-years ahead of any of Rob's peers. You hear 5 seconds of a rock song on the radio and you generally can't pick the song out....but it only took you 2 seconds to discern a Rob Zombie track....it just had something "extra." That "extra" was these albums producer - Scott Humphrey, and his genius contributions to the music in studio.

Rob Zombie- Educated Horses was a heart breaker. Was Rob trying to distance himself from the army of clones that sprang up after his solo success? (Even his original guitarist Riggs released "copy-cat" projects....Blah...Blah...Blah..Love Songs..projects that sounded more like Rob Zombie than "Educated Horses" did.) I'm a fan of artists changing and trying new things...and as long as it isn't complete crap...I can support them. I bought "Educated Horses" and saw him live 3 times during this era. I'm a fan, what can I say? I hung with him hoping this "raw, metal" phase would pass. And as much heat as "Educated Horses" got from fans, there were some legitimate good songs on that album. A lot of filler, but there were some great hooks and good song structure nonetheless. Although of course selfishly, I wanted this dirty hippy to quit making crap-metal and I wanted to see a return of the groove-heavy "phantom stranger."

From the live aspect, I'd see Rob before "Sinister Urge" was released and multiple times after. When Riggs was still with him, with all the heavy programming....I swear that Rob sounded TOO GOOD live. Although this has nothing to do with his albums, I've always wondered if the excessive programming in the studio and live was canned in an attempt to avoid a potential "Milli-Vanilli" with programmed vocals. And for anyone that has heard Rob live since the "Sinister Urge" era and then heard Rob's "live album" Zombie Live- you know Rob doesn't sound that good....and that live album is almost un-listenable; its that bad.

Now we move on to "Hellbilly Deluxe 2" I suppose the warning sign was when Rob left his record label (the one he had been with since White Zombie) citing their poor "promotion" of the upcoming album. One question Rob - how do you expect a label to sell an album-load of crap? Radio won't play it, casual fans won't buy it. With an industry as competitive as popular music, HD2 comes across more as a vehicle for Rob's already huge ego, than a legitimate album. Dude, you've spent a career defining modern rock and horror films - are you really that insecure that almost every page of your booklet needs a picture of you on it? Its practically laughable.

As far as the music, undercooked doesn't even scratch the surface. The best tracks of the album sound like filler from "Educated Horses" - and that's being generous. Its crazy that the distancing of himself from the programming and polished sound that got him to his current level has pushed him into copying more independent artists like Michale Graves Return To Earth and Wednesday 13 Skeletons. Unabashed samples, "raw," "garage rock" metal....poor lyrical and vocal delivery. Are we in High School again?

Rob produced this new album himself...(maybe saving a few bucks in production costs) but that poor decision shows. Without that point-and-check system in the form of a producer, no one was in the studio to stop Rob's inflated ego....(and Rob's line-up of live musicians must have indulged his whims -John 5 as well.) How can you seriously put your name on a song like "The Man who Laughs" - then look around the room at each other and agree, "Yeah, that one's a keeper." As much as you may hate denying it - Robs little brother (Powerman 5000) just put out an album that is LEAP YEARS ahead of anything Rob's done musically and sonically in 9 years. Doubts - just listen Somewhere on the Otherside of Nowhere

Its sad when Lil Wayne releases a better rock album than Rob Zombie on the same day. And unfortunately, Lil Wayne is getting more criticism than Rob. Go figure? Lil Wayne stepping out of his norm to create something challenging as an artist, while Rob cements himself into a studio with a mediocre "live" unit and re-hashing the same tired material.

Not this time Rob. Take a vacation, clear your head - and put this phase in the past.
