Music Review: Lukewarm, could have been much better

Musica+Alma+Sexo is not only Puerto Rican heartthrob Ricky Martin's comeback record, but also his attempt at staying relevant in a world where every five seconds a new pop star is born. Is he successful? Somewhat. Does he sound like he is trying too hard? Sometimes. Could he have made this a memorable work? Absolutely.
Where to start when talking about Ricky Martin and the legacy attached to the name? True, he is a pretty boy. True, he popped out of a prefabricated boy band. True, he got on the spotlight at the right time. But it is also true that the guy has talent. His voice is as malleable as his looks and his knack for setting a trend has worked. Until now, at least.
The first thing one notices when listening to MAS is how he continues to embrace the crowd pleasing sounds of today, but does not really look much beyond that, so the results are stale. Take Frio, for instance, a Latin-infused song that will surely be a single soon, that never takes off even in the remix version (featuring Wisin and Yandel) mainly because its construction is basic, flat. Lo mejor de mi vida eres tu is a feel good jingle that sounds more like something a soccer mom would be playing on the way to pick up her kids, than something a young listener would sing along to, that is, unless they do not what good pop is. Title track Mas (or Shine n the English version) sounds more contemporary and gives the record a great intro and a little edge, but unfortunately it leads nowhere past the third song.
I believe the problem with MAS is that Ricky has tried too hard to make it a multi genre record. In doing so he has lost perspective, shot in every direction possible, and dwindled the great possibilities lyrics and rhythms used here had.
With Cantame tu vida he scores a hit. A simple, acoustic song that sails smoothly and where he shows his vocal skills. The complete opposite happens with Te busco y te alcanzo, which departs from a mellow verse into an unbearable whine that is as annoying as surprising for someone who is a master at nailing ballads and infusing them with a living soul.
It is impossible to not bring up Martin's recent admission of homosexuality and its influence in his image and his creative process. Where it may have opened the gates to writing a successful memoir and been the key to gain acceptance from the audience (and disgust from those looking for hidden reasons), it has not contributed to delivering a solid record, as many of us expected. Musica+Alma+Sexo sounds contrived at times, over dramatic at others, but overall it is not the explosive comeback we wanted to hear from him.
The question of whether he is a relevant figure may be tricky for he is a recognizable icon in the arts, but is it because of that alone or because of the quality of his work?
