Music Review: A stunning feat setting the standard

I waited a long time to buy this version of Tristan und Isolde. I already have the Karajan recording with Dernesch and Vickers (1972). A visceral interpretation, much hot-steam, erotic, but without any subtlety. The orchestra dominates. That was Karajan's way.
I do have Boehm's recording of the complete Ring, a live recording of 1967 (and it is a marvel). But, I was reluctant to purchase this 'Tristan', recorded a year before, with the same Bayreuther Festspiele ensemble, also live. It featured Wolfgang Windgassen, the Tristan, then well past his prime, I assumed, and Boehm who was getting on a bit, both too old for this opera which requires so much physical effort.
My reservations were unfounded. Windgassen is the most sensitive Tristan on record, both strong and frail when needed. He manages to portray the complex role with immense conviction, always focused on the drama, and his voice is firm. In contrast, Vickers' Tristan, delivered at full-throttle, was uni-dimensional (Karajan's fault, here, not Vickers). Nilsson, of course, needs no clarification. Her stamina is extraordinary. Her interpretation of the role is legendary, and rightly so. Eberhard Waechter is a superb Kurwenal, Christa Ludwig, an unsurpassed Brangene, and Martti Talvela, the best King Mark on record.
This live recording has each act on a single disc - three in all - and it is a fitting testament to these singers' art, dramatic focus and energy, and to Boehm's no nonsense approach to the score. This is an opportunity to hear what operatic singing was really like on the stage, an extreme example of endurance, before all the mechanical devices made 'live' recordings less than 'live' in reality.
This is an opera with only five characters, and a few minor roles, a most intimate ensemble by Wagnerian standards. This is a Tristan und Isolde, on a human scale, and passionate, and without adornment - with orchestra and singers - giving you the magic of a love story, an ancient tale, reinterpreted by Wagner's twisted mind. No matter, great music, fantastic singing, and an unforgettable experience.

Birgit Nilsson blazes as Isolde, and Wolfgang Windgassen's Act-III evocation of the delusional Tristan is heart-wrenching.
