Music Review: Totally unreleased Richard Thompson

I know Shout Factory is about to release a 4 cd set of hand selected Richard Thompson tracks, all 71 selected by the guitarist himself. And no doubt Shout Factory will do their usual wonderful job of making the sound just so. The set will include cuts from every album RT has ever recorded, including Fairport Convention lps, albums done with then wife Linda Thompson, RT solo albums, etc. However, Free Reed Music, in its series of British folk anthologies presents here, 5 discs of totally unreleased Thompson recordings. That's right, all unreleased. Unbelievable you say, well those of you familiar with Free Reed's series which includes sets by such British folkies as Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings know that this is no joke. The beautifully packaged set includes 4 discs completely full of RT at his finest, cuts with Fairport Convention, with ex-wife Linda Thompson, solo efforts, all aspects of Thompson's illustrious career. The fifth disc is a bit short, something over 40 minutes and is in a cardboard mini lp sleeve rather than in a standard jewel case as the other four discs are. The music alone makes this set a bargain, the fact that it is totally unreleased makes it essential, the 150 plus page booklet nakes it an absolutely necessary element of any Richard Thompson fan's collection. There is no way of knowing how long this Free Reed collection will remain in print or even be available. Without doubt it fits the category of musical investment. Years from now this, along with the other Free Reed collections will be worth many times their original list price. But don't just purchase this set as an investment. First and foremost buy it for the listening pleasure. The discs are presented thematically, and are absolute pleasures to the listener's ears. I cannot stress enough the historical importance of this release as well as the other Free Reed Music box sets. All have been lovingly compiled, mastered, and presented with book length booklets which actually have individual prices marked on them. Believe me, the booklets are worth every pence of their suggested retail price, but are included here at no cost above the price of the box set itself. So, be sure to pick up the Shout Factory box set when it is released later this month, but make sure you also add this set to your collection. Guitar purists will want it for the sake of Thompson's talent, fans of British folk rock will want it as an artifact of the genre, and lovers of fine music will want it because its just simply Richard Thompson at his finest. And none of these tracks are available anywhere else. Period. Buy it. Listen to it. Love it.

Earlier releases from Free Reed found the label mining the riches of British folk-rock from the likes of Fairport Convention (which featured Thompson in its most popular incarnation), but here they've hit the mother lode. This isn't the place for a newcomer to start with Thompson, as other "best-of" anthologies and career-spanning compilations might provide a better introduction. Instead, this is a treasure trove that will offer discovery for even the most devoted fan. Each disc has a theme--epic ballads, discarded songs, the essential canon--with the disc of cover versions particularly fascinating. From performance tapes, Thompson makes everything from the Who's "Substitute" and Squeeze's "Tempted" to the traditional "Danny Boy" and "Shenandoah" sound like his own. The expansive selection illuminates Thompson as an artist of great range and subtlety, humor and heart, from the intimacy of his solo acoustic performances to galvanizing, electrically charged renditions of masterpieces such as "Shoot Out the Lights," "For Shame of Doing Wrong," and "Calvary Cross."
