Music Review: R & H at their best

Most of the reviewers of this cd seem to evaluate it in comparison to the soundtrack version. Comparisons are unnecessary; this recording stands tall on its own.
Having said that, I make one comment in comparison. One reviewer wrote, "Mary Martin is no Julie Andrews." In truth. Julie Andrews is no Mary Martin. Perhaps, because of her age, Martin could not have stood up to the close-ups of the screen version. But, musically, she is Maria von Trapp.
One of the real strengths of this recording, to me, is the orchestrations. Normally, I fault any orchestrations that call attention to themselves. In this case, I did not notice them until some of the interludes, which are beautifully done.
Theodore Bikel has just the right touch for the militaristic disciplinarian whose heart turns soft. His rendition of "Edelweis" is an outstanding example of folk singing.
The children ("Oh, yes, the children" [The King and I]) sound like children, as they should--not an enhanced group of highly trained young singers.
Personally, I find little value in "bonus tracks." Usually, they are mere filler, to justify the price of a cd. But, I must say that I appreciate the "Symphonic Picture for Orchestra" on this disk. The Sing Along with Mitch, I can easily do without.

RCA. 2005.Most of the civilized world identifies this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic with the Robert Wise film, one of the most successful movie musicals of all time ("The Sound of Money," critic Pauline Kael termed it). Which is why this recording can be so disconcerting. Not only are there different tunes ("How Can Love Survive," "Laendler," "No Way to Stop It," but no "Confidence" or "Something Good," both written for the film), but Captain Von Trapp is played by heavyset folksinger Theodore Bikel, a far cry from young Christopher Plummer. Mary Martin was not only much older than the film's Julie Andrews, she wasn't even British! Then again, neither was the real Maria--and the stage version is, in many ways, more faithful to the Von Trapp Family Singers' true story. --Bill Holdship
