Music Review: Heil dir, Held!

There are many operas which are appropriate to the holiday season -- Humperdinck's "H?nsel und Gretel" and Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors", of course, or even Massenet's "Werther", ending as it does with ironic No?ls. But Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin", with its brilliant choruses, its golden images, and its religious conflict (Pagan vs Christian), seems like an obvious choice for a joyous season, its melancholy ending notwithstanding. In fact, "Lohengrin", like so many holiday favorites, has fairy tale elements: the damsel in distress, the knight in shining armour, the wicked witch. Now, I have to admit, "Lohengrin" is my favorite opera; it's like a treasure chest that dazzles you when you first lift the lid, but only when you start to examine the individual jewels, one by one, are you truly impressed. One is naturally so awed by the Preludes to Act I and Act III and the gorgeous Bridal Procession of Act II, that it's only after a third or fourth hearing that you are struck by the exquisite duet between Elsa and Ortrud in the first half of Act II or Act III's Entrance of the Nobles, which could be the official march of the Forty Niners or the New York Giants. Then of course there is the First Act curtain to end all First Act curtains. This 1963 recording has Rudolf Kempe conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, a worthy comparison to Kubelik or von Karajan. Jess Thomas is stalwart as the Swan Knight, a difficult heldentenor role because Lohengrin is obviously heroic but he has a gentle side quite foreign to a bully like Siegfried. One of the great sorrows of discography is that Fritz Wunderlich never recorded Lohengrin. Elisabeth Gr?mmer's Elsa has a sweet "Euch L?ften, die mein Klagen" but later her high notes are sometimes quite sharp. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau gives a somber dignity to Telramund, a character I've alway felt sorry for; it seems like the King and the people turn against him much too quickly. The outstanding role in "Lohengrin", of course, is Ortrud, here performed by the superb Christa Ludwig. There have been many Ortruds praised over the past generation -- Leonie Rysanek for instance. Evidently it's fashionable to disparage Gwyneth Jones, but her Ortrud on the Kubelik recording is a masterpiece of envy and manipulation. She's a fine dramatic soprano, though her voice is not as well-controlled as Ludwig's. As for that audio glitch in the first scene of Act II it is barely noticeable as it is covered up by the heavy orchestration, but it is there. However, this is overall a very good recording, an exciting gift for the holidays -- or birthdays, for that matter.

Description of Lohengrin

This celebrated 1964 recording of Lohengrin with Rudolf Kempe and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra still stands the test of time: it's a terrifically exciting performance. Kempe is a superb draftsman, and he keeps the orchestra lively, exuberant, but never strident. Pride of place must be given to the soloists: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is a riveting Friedrich, Jess Thomas a dynamic Lohengrin, and Elisabeth Grummer a most moving Elsa. --Joshua Cody
