Music reviews of Strauss: Don Quixote; Ein Heldenleben; Symphonia DomesticaMusic Review: great Rating: 5 Stars
Karajan was always a great performer of the music of Richard Strauss. You can trust me, as a student on conducting section, I always think the scores of Strauss are immensely difficult. They are very complex, and you can lost yourself in the polyphony and orchestration of Strauss. I think the most difficult ones are Sinfonia domestica and Eine Alpensinfonie.
In these 2 cds, you can find good examples to how a great Strauss perform must be. First, we have Don Quixote, which there is really great humouristic, grotesque moments and delightful scenes. It is the most colourful tone poem of Strauss, which calls prominent solos for viola (portrays Sancho Panza) and cello (portrays Don Quixote). The cello soloist is Rostropovich, and he is at his heights of power in that recording. I have also Karajan's earlier 1965 account of Don Quixote with Pierre Fournier, here it is: Strauss: Don Quixote / Karajan, Fournier. That version is also good, but with Rostropovich (recorded in 1974) there is something more intensity, deeply dedication, inner beauty. Just check out the Epilogue, which depicts The Death of Don Quixote, it will get your tears, you can trust me... And there are some great moments just like "Ride through air" (which includes a terrific wind-machine), the wave-effect of "Enchanted Boat", superb the fluttering-technic of the winds in "the Battle with Sheeps". All of them performed succesfully.
And then, we have Sinfonia domestica. This is one of the two autobiographical tone poems of the master. This one is again has a sense of humour, and orchestrated masterfully. Karajan and his Berliner sound very full of warm, sensitive. Especially the love scene sounds so great as a Wagner...
And last, we have the other autobiographical tone poem, "Ein Heldenleben". This is more serious, gorgeous and vigorous one. Again there is a sensous love scene, but after it, immediately, there is a savage battle scene. But after the victory of the hero, there is a tranquil finale which depicts the renunciation and the farewell to the world...
And by the way, about the split of Sinfonia domestica: I see the other rewievers has some complaints about the split thing. But I would recommend to think more optimistic, please, because the performance is great, the music is of course great, there is not abridged time, so what? And we must remember, in the age of LP, this 40-minute work have to split, because one side of LP has duration for 25-29 minutes. So, if you have been in the LP age, you must change the side, and this CD version is just like that, you can think. And in that way we have three long tone poems on two cds.
This is worth to buy and listening. Very highly recommended.
