Music Review: Stunning Soprano

Because I enjoy listening to Renee Fleming, I bought this album too. I haven't heard her perform it live but this is almost as good as hearing it live. She not only sounds good but she looks good too.
Description of Four Last Songs
This is the special, deluxe edition! In addition to the Strauss program, a second disc which highlights Fleming's signature roles at the Metropolitan Opera is included. These extended scenes are drawn from her highly-regarded Decca discography. Ren?e Fleming, the world's preeminent lyric soprano, is joined by Christian Thielemann, internationally acclaimed for his performances of Strauss works, for this recording of the exquisitely beautiful Four Last Songs. These enduringly popular works have become signature pieces for the soprano and she was delighted for the opportunity to work with the gifted Thielemann. In addition, Fleming performs a selection of lieder with orchestra as well as arias from Ariadne auf Naxos and Die ?gyptische Helena.. On September 22, Fleming will open the Met Opera Season with a Gala featuring her in her most acclaimed roles. This one-night-only performance will be broadcast live in HD to movie theaters throughout the US.Ren?e Fleming's voice is still so beautiful and in such glorious condition that it's difficult to believe that she has been singing professionally for over 20 years and will be 50 next year. The creamy, warm quality almost never fails her, and on this new CD of music by Richard Strauss, the lush, luscious sound is very much in evidence. And she still has the long, flowing breath needed to carry Strauss's long melodies to their conclusions. Many of her fans love her habit of swooning up to notes and enunciating key words (in the first song, "Fr?hling," she makes her voice tremble on the word "zittert,"/ "tremble") for dramatic effect; others will find that it is annoying and getting in the way of the music. On the other hand, the exquisite way she has with "Winterweihe" is utterly winning, the form and content simple and ravishing, the high notes stunning. Once past the exaggerated, breathy recitative, she does well with Ariadne's long, two-octave scene, and by its end, she sounds ecstatic. The scene from "Die Aegiptische Helene" is so difficult that Fleming merely sings it without adding any "original" touches, and it's thrilling. Christian Thielemenn and the Munich Philharmonic offer handsome support. -- Robert Levine
