Music Review: Wow.

I heard a lot about Recess Monkey in the local press, but never got around to listening to their music. Then, in the library, this album jumped out at me when I was looking for some cds for my daughter. I'm a huge Beatles fan, and the cover caught my eye because Sgt. Pepper is my all-time favorite Beatles record. Then I saw that this album was by Recess Monkey, so I checked it out.
This disc blew me away. I'm a grownup. I have an extensive music collection spanning all genres and styles. I like to think that I have good taste. Aminal House captured my attention from the first track, and held me to the end. And it's a pretty long album!
Most kids music that I've heard I would consider to be pure crap. I hate to say it. Much of it is watered down, synth-heavy, sugary-sweet to the point of annoyance, and often condescending to the inherant intelligence of a child. Recess Monkey has found a way to keep it all goofy enough to be a lot of fun for kids, but still craft some amazing songs that adults can hear over and over and over again (the way kids tend to listen to music) and not want to kill themselves. The only other 'kids' artist I can give this same praise to is Elizabeth Mitchell. Granted, I don't go out of my way to buy or listen to children's music, so maybe I'm being a bit simplistic, but the point is that Recess Monkey is great, for kids and adults.
So get this disc. Especially if you live in Seattle. Support local music and help send Recess Monkey into the big time!
