Music Review: Everybody Loves Romano
Rating: 4 Stars
Ray Romano has seen incredible success on his CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond but was still overshadowed by Seinfeld for years. Comparisons between Jerry Seinfeld and Ray Romano cannot be overlooked since his New York backround and delivery are similar. While I like Seinfeld, Ray Romano probably has the best sitcom since Cheers. His humor is family based and exposes family dysfunction that we haven't seen since All in the Family. If you have never seen his hit TV show then you will find the material on this stand up CD new and hilarious. If you have seen the show and I admit I've seen practically every episode, some of Romanos material will be familiar. While most comedians are very funny on stage but have mediocre television runs, Ray Romano's Everybody Loves Raymond is a multi Emmy Award winner. The fact is the show is so underated that it probably won't be until years of syndication where most people will truly recognize Ray Romanos genius. This Comedy CD comes after 5 years of by far the best sitcom on TV so it's hard for Romano to invent all new material and be the raw comedian that got him the series in the first place through David Lettermans production company, Worldwide Pants. The truth is Ray is a fantastic stand up comic but maybe even a better sitcom actor. Much of Live at Carnegie Hall involves the audience and moves slightly slower than his Ray Barone character on CBS but it's amazing what staff writers and film can do. Let us not forget on each episode of the show credit is given, "Based on the comedy of Ray Romano." Live at Carnegie Hall is a great CD but his television series has been a silent Gem for 6 seasons now. If your not familiar with the early years of the show the CD is a must listen. If you have watched the approximately 145 episodes you'll know much of this material. Ray Romano has given himself to Burbank Studios in Hollywood and his show is right up there with the best sitcoms of all time. This CD is a great way to catch up.
