Music Review: I am not the target customer, but it appeals to many and is perfect background music for the right holiday party

Ray Conniff was a talented trombonist who hit upon a winning commercial formula in the 1960s. He could take any piece from any musical source, run it through his formula and come out with a sound that appealed to millions. He became immensely popular as the kind of music one heard in elevators and supermarkets. Conniff never took himself or his product too seriously and was smart enough to never deviate from his method.
I am not his target customer and find the kind of easy snappy music kind of dead. However, I don't want to take anything away from those who really enjoy it, and there are many because the music is still in print after 40 years! That is saying something. I am simply not the target customer.
The sound is basically a kind of anonymous mixed voices singing style with a soft rock beat, with guitars, and small orchestra. Nothing much changes from song to song.
Having this as background music at a holiday party would be honoring this music for exactly the purpose for which it was created.

This orchestral-pop superstar was in the midst of his streak of hit Columbia LPs when he wrapped up this 1965 holiday gift for his fans. Here are his wonderfully effervescent versions of O Tannenbaum; What Child Is This? It Came upon the Midnight Clear; Joy to the World; O Little Town of Bethlehem , and more!In the 50's, former big band trombonist-turned-arrange Ray Coniff experimented with replacing solo instrumental parts with often wordless vocal choruses and concocted the wildly successful easy listening ethos that came to symbolize pre-rock pop. This 1965 collection of Christmas favorites is a testament to the staying power of Coniff's milieu, even at the height of Beatlemania (which bizarrely inspired the arranger to set "Joy to the World" to a Liverpool beat). Backed by Coniff's typically bubbly arrangements, the impossibly joyful, pristine voices here seem to be caroling at some timeless, unlikely crossroads of hipster kitsch and nostalgic Americana. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" even evokes the Hollywood Western ethos of former Conniff colleague Frankie Laine so convincingly that one almost expects to hear Santa cracking a whip over Rudolph's head on the fade-out. --Jerry McCulley
