There are constants that Latin Jazz needs to stay Latin Jazz. The set bass patterns, the percussion, the drive. I'll bet this album and all my Jobim cds that no one knows that more than the master, Ray Barretto.
Some things stay the same, others change. Go back to 1967 and listen to Ray's Acid. If a space alien came down, I'd play him Acid to show him what Latin Jazz was.
Other Road was recorded in 1973, another world entirely. One far more influenced by rock, the youth culture, and electric instruments. Barretto has in fact changed a lot for this album. The staples that make Latin Jazz such--and Barretto the master he is--are all here.
But this is not your father's Latin Jazz. Electric instruments, extended pieces, blistering solos and even a little free form jamming are all over Other Road.
Barretto's alterations here are extremely effective. By expanding the possibilities of the music, including rock elements, he creates music that works, perfectly, as both. Even if you have heard no Latin Jazz, Other Road would be a fantastic start. It won't give you a textbook definition of the music, but it will sure as hell give you the best of the genre to listen to.
