Music Review: Not a masterpiece, but good enough.

Adalberto Santiago and Tito Allen (the usual suspects) did lead vocals on this 1978 album. I would like to start off by criticizing Fania on their lackluster job of sound recording on this album. I get this was done a LONG time ago, but I think they could have done a better job with that. My second concern was that on "Indestructible," for some reason some musicians seem out of sync.
On a better note, Adalberto gives a truly masterful performance in "Alma con Alma" and shows his great versatility when it comes to singing salsa and boleros (which I think is his true love.) The standout track has to be for me "Quitate la Mascara" a song that ALWAYS gets me going and should rank right up there with "Indestructible" and "Hijo de Obatala" as his all-time best. With his amazing solos, once again Barretto shows us he was one of, if not THE best (I struggle to pick between him and Mongo) congueros to ever grace the Earth.
The album is by no means bad, "Indestructible" kind of disappointed me though. Is it short on tracks (6)? Yes. So if you want a truly great LIVE performance by Barretto, I recommend his 50th anniversary album, a 2 CD set which was OUTSTANDING in every sense (sound, performance.) Plus it has Blades and Ray de la Paz along with Allen and Santiago.
