Music reviews of RattMusic Review: Ratts Return
The long awaited return of Ratt to the rock scene delivers a self-titled CD that picks up right where long time Ratt fans where left after the bands hiatus that began in the early 90's and gives them what may be Ratt's best work yet. Pearcy's voice has an undeniable presence, especially on this CD. And it is perfectly accompanied by Demartini's precision on lead guitar. Blotzer and Crane deliver the drums and bass, and together they have the chemistry that jolted these guys out of L.A. and into mainstream rock back in 84. This self-titled CD is the first original material from Ratt since the late 80's. It's got a harder rocking sound than Great White and Warrant, far less glam than Poison and the other make-up kings from the 80's had, and the lyrics can be heard clearly. The disk has a more evolved sound than their more easily accessible albums like Out Of The Cellar, Invasion Of Your Privacy, and Reach For The Sky that put them into mainstream rock back in the 80's. Some songs have a bluesy feel to them, especially "Luv Sick," but every song on this disk is worth a listen. The disk shows a more mature Ratt, both lyrically and especially musically. Some of the tracks aren't as fast and hard rocking as most of their previous material, yet the master guitar work of Warren Demartini hooks the listener from the beginning on "Over The Edge" all the way till the last track "So Good, So Fine", a song about being on the road. The rapid, in & out waver of the guitar intro on "Over The Edge" gives a cautious feeling. Then the heavy, slow rolling guitar chords break in and verses soon follow. Pearcy's vocals rise and fall in close synchronicity with Demartini's power chords during the verses; it sounds like it could be the background music heard in an old western movie as a lone gunslinger walks into an unfamiliar saloon. Not the typical Ratt song; it's definitely a newer, fresher sound. Then the chorus kicks in and you're reassured that it's Ratt doing their thing, Ratt-N-Rolling! Tracks two, four, and five seem to have a similar message - moving on, and moving beyond current situations and living life to the fullest. "Live For Today" has a moderate tempo; it's the backup vocals during the choruses that make this song rock. Pearcy sings, "live for today, don't wait until tomorrow/ wasting your time being somewhere you don't want to be!" "We Don't Belong" talks about the inevitable ending of a good relationship. Pearcy's voice is melodic, accenting the lyrics in an up and down manner to give a beautiful flow to an almost sad song. Then these L.A. boys pick up the beat on the next track, "Breakout" - a rocking tune that grabs your attention immediately, mostly due to Demartini's always-amazing guitar work. Over screaming guitars Pearcy sings, "Breakout, turn around/time to get on up and get your feet on the ground/breakout, take a bite out of life/man don't you worry everything will be alright." Track nine, "It Ain't Easy," is not as fast and hard as Ratt's previous hits like "Round & Round" and "Shame Shame Shame," but it's a deeper, more emotional song. Pearcy sings with a lot of feeling and heart on this one. While I could speculate as to the message within the lyrics, I think the interpretation is best left to you. Check this disk out for yourself; it's worth it! If you're into bands like L.A. Guns, Dokken, Cinderella, or Motley Crue, you'll want to add this CD to your collection; this disk is at least as good, if not better, than any of the albums Ratt made from 83 to 91. Even if you were only slightly familiar with Ratt during the height of their career in the 80's, chances are you'll like this one. They are giving us another chance to experience what hard-core Ratt fans have known and loved for almost two decades: awesome rock songs delivered by Pearcy's confident, tough voice and master musicians to back it up.
