Those who like sanitized rock `n' roll without soul will enjoy this immaculately produced box set from Proper. It features performers who came to rock `n' roll in the pre-Elvis early `50s and appealed largely to white adult lounge patrons of the time. Most of these artists were older than the teens starting to dig black R&B at the time -- contemporaries of Bill Haley with a similar band sound, except Haley jived more. Maybe that's why Haley had hits and most of these songs were commercial duds. Some who were in the Elvis generation, like Eddie Fontaine and Paul Hampton, still sound too clean cut with an emotionless suburban style, complete with perfect diction. The exceptions on this set are Danny and The Juniors, whose first smash ("At The Hop") and its flip side are included, and Big "T" Tyler, a true Texas R&B man backed by the cream of Los Angeles studio musicians on "King Kong." Why these truly rockin' tracks made it into this otherwise ricky-ticky conglomeration is beyond me. Another mystery is how the two black groups represented here -- The Cues and The Treniers -- sounded so white, so soulless. There are better Cues cuts to be had, such as the original "Burn That Candle" before Bill Haley's cover version, but they aren't on this collection. To be fair, a few tunes on these discs other than "At The Hop" also were successful, like Boyd Bennett's "Seventeen," but don't expect to have heard of the vast majority. It's generally the World War Two swing set trying to be cool in the early rock era, like the "Your Hit Parade" TV show of the `50s -- Snooky Lanson and his crowd failing to be hip rockers as they riffed through the hits of the week. It's more like Louis Prima than anything else. In fact, one of the groups in this collection -- Jimmy Daley and His Ding-A-Lings -- is really Henry Mancini's orchestra corralled into doing a sound track for a `50s rock `n' roll movie, and you know all about his rock credentials! One song is of particular interest -- not musically, but historically: It's the 1955 version of "Hound Dog" by Freddie Bell and The Bellboys that inspired Elvis' 1956 blockbuster. However, Elvis knew what to do with the song while Bell didn't. Did these guys even know that rock evolved from blues? With the exceptions I've noted, this collection has the driest back beat I've ever heard. Another review on this page says the audio lacks warmth, but to me, the chill is not in the sound quality, but the music. This is not rock `n' roll as my boomer generation knew it. The sounds might inspire Brian Setzer, but not The Rolling Stones.
