Music Review: Travis' Latest Should Not Just "Pass Through"

Prime Cuts: Four Walls, I'm Your Man, I Can See It in Your Eyes
Don't let the shrieks of grey hair on this former Grammy winner fool you. Aging has not made Travis lethargic or cynical of music or life as it sometimes can do. Rather, brimming with vivacity is Travis' 16th and most reflective album. "Passing Through," unlike his three previous Christian albums, is his return to contemporary country, the musical acreage that has yielded for Travis such fruitful gems such as "Hard Rock Bottom of My Heart," "Are We in Trouble Now?," "Point of Light," "Heroes and Friends," "Whisper My Name" amongst others. A feeling of déjà vu resonates as longtime producer Kyle Lehning brings us back to Travis' "No Holding Us Back" days where the musical backing is solidly country and kept to the background allowing Travis' distinctive southern drawl to be the spotlight.
Thematically, family tableaus dominate the narratives of this album with the album's keeping power residing in the lead off single "Four Walls." Not the Jim Reeves' hit of the same title, "Four Walls" a newly composed love ballad has Travis living by his granddad's recipe for a happy marriage: "four walls, three words, two hearts and one love." Gorgeously written with hearty portions of heart warming indulgences, "Four Walls" is easily an indispensable Randy Travis classic. Somehow autobiographical is the propulsive "That Was Just," a tale of a misguided youth treading on the wrong side of the tracks. Corollary to "That Was Us," is "Angel," a Troy Seals, Buck Moore and Harvey McNalley composition. This ear grabbing ballad is a half spoken narrative number about a mother's resilience and love in raising a rebellious son. Overcoming obstacles is also the theme of Jamie O'Hara's lilting "Pick Up the Oars and Row," an uncluttered jaunty number augmented by plenty of inspirational sounding fiddling.
With a repertoire that contains some of country's most heart tugging tunes ("Forever and Ever Amen," "This Is Me" and "Look Heart, No Hands"), the king of romance doesn't disappoint. Packed with idyllic charm is Travis' pledge of unconditional love on his self penned dexterous ballad "I'm Your Man." Over a simple yet sententious tune, Travis bares his soul on one of the finest parting tunes to date, "I Can See It in Your Eyes." Travis' seasonal tenor heightened by his sensitivity to the emotional nuances of the song makes his performance here paramount. For those who like to see Travis boogie woogie, Dennis Linde's "Train Long Gone" will once again prove that Travis can rock as well as Brooks and Dunn on this spirited gospel-like barn burner.
Unlike many younger country artists who tend to sing like they were reading off the lyrics sheet, Travis' phrasing shows that he owns each song. On hearing this album, one does not feel a modicum of pretension on Travis' part. With his rich Christian heritage and his commitment to the family, Travis really shines on these tunes. Exuding a strong moral stance, "Passing Through" not only does not bypass his Christian fan base, but it will certainly add depth to the listening pleasures of his country music admirers. An album that ought not to just pass through!
