Music Review: Perfect for Jazz Appreciation Month and the Rest of the Year Too

The ability to reinvent itself with fresh versions of classic standards that sound like sparkling new compositions is one of the great qualities of jazz that has allowed it to evolve, endure, and blossom throughout the last century on into this one. That power of eternal dynamism is fully evident on Randy Crawford and Joe Sample's new set, FEELING GOOD.
Crawford's trademark raw-silk vocals and Sample's exquisite piano phrasings prove to be an irresistible combination through thirteen diamond-solid tracks. Kicking off the set is Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse's "Feeling Good," a song first made famous by Nina Simone and popularized more recently by Canadian crooner Michael Buble. Crawford and Sample add a heavy and infectious dose of bop to their performance with Crawford scatting up thrilling euphoria toward the song's end. They revisit the Nina Simone songbook with a bold take on "See Line Woman."
Among the big and welcomed surprises on this CD are the cover of Billie Holiday's "Tell Me More and More and Then Some." This very edgy rendition is a powerful work of genius in its own right but it's also a strong reminder of all the things that made Billie Holiday the great jazz artist that she was. Other unexpected gems include Peter Gabriel's "Lovetown" and Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking." Crawford fans are bound to debate the wisdom of her and Sample's decision to re-do their own classic recordings of "Rio De Janiero Blue" and "Last Night at Danceland." Since they were so flawless the first time around, why bother? The answer might be to slow the songs down a beat and add greater emphasis to Crawford's interpretation of the lyrics as well as to Samples ability to underscore and enhance the songs' moody dramatic appeal. This particular element is a prominent one throughout the CD and made all the more powerful by producer Tommy LiPuma's use of a sleek line-up of musicians: Steve Gadd (drums), Christian McBride (bass), Dean Parks (guitar), Ray Parker, Jr. (guitar), Anthony Wilson (guitar), and Luis Quintero (percussion).
There are no duds on Feeling Good but the Crawford/Sample duo is at its mesmerizing best on the aforementioned "Tell Me More and More and Then Some," and the Curtis Lewis-penned "All Night Long." True instant classics are rare, but make no mistake about it, this is one. With April being Jazz Appreciation Month, it's a perfect CD for discovering, rediscovering, and thoroughly enjoying the music now and the rest of the year too.
