Music Review: Solid introduction to the band

When I think of Punk I think of a rock' n 'roll genre that become big in the mid-late 1970s, and the first band that comes to my mind when I think of Punk is The Ramones before any other. To me The Ramones define Punk and represent what it should be along with a few others such as Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Punk is a genre that was all about raw power, desire to play and more often than not Punk musicians were not all that talented (and in some cases fairly mediocre). I will admit that I was never the biggest Punk fan but it's just unfortunate how this great band from New York never really got the recognition they deserve (but it seems they have become more popular in recent years) as they have been really influential without ever being really popular. It's worth nothing that naming a Ramones compilation "Greatest Hits" is considered inaccurate among fans of the band, The Ramones never had any "Hits" and they have spend their entire career in the underground overshadowed by other bands, unknown by many and simply ignored by critics. Let's face this greatest hits collection (and just about any other greatest hits album) is for the casual fans who only want a few hits or perhaps look at those collections as a way to get into a band, to figure out if they want more of the band.
Some people will be satisfied with such a collection and those 20 songs here may do that for them. The songs everyone expects to be on a Ramones best of album are here: Blitzkrieg Bop, I Wanna Be Sedated, Sheena Is a Punk Rocker, Rock'N'Roll High School, Pet Sematary etc. For the most part I'm satisfied with the material included, I believe those 20 songs serve as a good introduction to this great and TRUE Punk band, there's not much to complain about really. To me it represents the band correctly it has their fast hard driving songs like "Blitzkrieg" and "Warthog" along the more subtle and melodic "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and "I Just Wanna Have Something to Do", the catchy . It's worth noting that the band's song were usually pretty short which explains why they fit as much song as they did on this disc. The hardcore fans would probably have added and replaced some songs but for the most part, someone relatively new to the band will like this compilation. If you're looking to get into the band or want to add this great band to your musical collection Greatest Hits is an excellent way to do so. However if you're looking for something a little more comprehensive the anthology album or even Loud, Fast Ramones: Their Toughest Hits (which has ten more songs)may be more of what you're looking for. The Ramones certainly do have their hardcore fans but many will be fine with a hits album without needing much more if anything else at all. Those 20 songs make for an interesting collection of Ramones songs and one that casual fans are likely to enjoy. I honestly believe that if these 20 songs aren't enough to get you into this great band then you likely never will. 4/5.
