Music reviews of Reise ReiseMusic Review: The storm breaks! Rating: 5 Stars
"Reise, Reise" is the latest edition to Rammstein's discography and while it is notably different that doesn't mean it has to be disappointing. I always make it a point to expect nothing of anyone (let alone musicians) so that when they deliver something they never can fail my hopes- because I have none. When I picked up this CD and put it in I liked it considerably, but as the weeks have gone on and I've come to get to know each song I can only say this: HOT DAMN! What a record! Anyone who didn't like this really needs to sit back down and run back through it because Rammstein delivers more than 100% here: The quality of the music, the mixing, the vocals- everything here paints a masterpiece of music. This is the best album I've heard in years.
1: Reise, Reise (Voyage, Voyage/Arise, Arise) The band blows us all away with this powerful opening track with a title of two meaings (one based on an olden day fisherman wakeup call). The lyrics, the vocal distortions, the instruments- it all comes together and builds into a dramatic chorus which has a fell like their songs "Mein Herz Brent" and "Sonne". It is beautiful and ends with an accordian solo that just completes it (no matter how odd that sounds).
2: Mein Teil (My Thing): First off I have to say this song is the hardest song on the albumn, but the other songs hold up in their own ways. Mein Teil is a song based on that cannibal who placed an add in a paper for someone to eat- and got a reply (this really happened). Till's voice is a lot more menacing and high during the verses and deep and cool during all the other brilliantly crarfed interludes and chorus. This song will never bore you- it's a gem. I love the creepy grinding/mixing and choir part in the end.
3: Dalai Lama: Probably the best track on the album all about- but not my favorite. This song is beautiful, strange and creepy- and I believe that the most time was spent on this one. Lyrics are based off a poem about a father who suffocates his son while trying to save him. The chorus harmonies are incredible and the guitars are so groovy! Everyone came together like never before here, each musical part complimenting each other wonderfully. It's a mid paced song I guess, but picks up in the end especially.
4: Keine Lust (No Desire): The sexual song on this album- they all need at least 1!- but this time it's about not feeling like doing it. This is a fast song with a driving, quick melody line and incredible lyrics. This one sounds more like their older songs with the guitar playing more of a set rhythm. It's fabulous and addictive- especially the mixing that sounds like those austrailian diggerydoos.
5: Los (Less): This is without a doubt the most dancible song they've ever done. This also is the song that seems least like their style as it's got a blues sound to it (even a harmonica). The words of this song are all plays on the German language including on where they call themselves Godless or God, depending on how you look at it. Groovy and great beat. Despite it being so different for them they pull it off with ease and mastery.
6: Amerika (America): Weee... Um, this song is aparently causing a lot of contravery amongst fans- oh well. I have to say this song is great- no really! The words and melody are beautiful, the mixing is great- especially the techno solo in the end that sounds like you walked into an arcade. It's witty and sad feeling and has great guitars to it- hard and driving! Great choir in this too. All in all I think it's another of the best songs on here.
7: Moskau (Moscow): I. LOVE. THIS. SONG.- but it's still not my favoite. This is the best of the harder songs on the album. The lyrics might upset Russians, but oh well. The highlights of this song are the Russian chick singing along with him through the whole song "Ras, Dva, Tre!" and the melody line is so unique and cool. The duo vocals play brilliantly off each other and the accordian solo makes this song, sounding sober and longing and pretty. The music is really good in this one- must have been a lot of fun to write and record. A lot of heart went into this and it is amazing. Too bad it's not a single- it would be great.
8: Morganstern (Morning Star): For those who don't know "Morning Star is another name for the devil. This song is I think the third hardest song on the album and is very pretty despite that with an amazing choir part singing along during the chorus and in their own little solo part. The guitars are again like the usual grinding riffs that everyone loves. The words of this one are different than what you'd expect with such a pretty melody. Diffenently a great listen.
9: Stein Um Stein (Stone By Stone): The second hardest song on the album actualy starts out sounding really soft and perhapes beautiful, but quickly turns raw and rough during the chorus. I LOVE this song too. It transitions back and forth from pretty to goth wonderfully and Tills lyrics are deep and wonderful- especially when he screams in this song (which he does a lot). The words are about building a house around himself and his love- in the most disturbing way you could imagine- it's a masterpiece again. Love when he ends on "ramm" in the verse and screams out "STEIN!" which leads into an incredible guitar solo.
10: Ohne Dich (Without You): I know I'm writing a lot about each song, but they're all so good they deserve the long descriptions! Really! And this one deserves the most credit I think. It is the most heartwrenching, beautiful thing they have ever written. The words are so tragic and sad and Till sounds so pretty in this song. I love the strings and the piano and the guitars- and the pretty pretty bass part. It's soooo sad! It's gorgeous, it definantly should get some award or something. You'll love it once you hear it- there's no way you can't... maybe if you're in denail...
11: Amour: THIS is my favorite song on the album! (those who have heard it all turn and look at me like I have a brain disease). No really! I cannot get enough of this song! It starts out sounding like it will be really simple and cool with the guitar part and drums with Till speaking quietly and deeply over- even the first chorus is just as quiet as the verses. It is so deep and rumbly and eerie sounding- this uncooth song about love ripping you apart like an animal. The rhythm of the words song is great too. But when you get to the middle of the song where it picks up, you'll understand why I love this song. It is the most haunting song on the album, perhaps the most haunting they've ever done. I love the end where Till goes up a notch and sings a bit higher ending with the repeated spoken plea "Bitte, Bitte, gib mir gift!" or, "Please- PLEASE, give me poison."
This album is better than any other- it is a whirlwind of talent and musical genious. No one can deny it- even if it was not what they wanted (or expected). They have finally reached the extent of musical skills we've all been waiting for. It's great to see a band grow and grow and grow. Let's see what happens next with them!
