Music Review: Previn's Fine Vaughan Williams Cycle

It is important to remember, as with any symphony cycle, there are going to be performances that you may find great and others you might find disappointing, well I'm here to say that this VW cycle on RCA is one of the best complete cycles I've heard by this composer. I find Previn's interpretations to be top-notch. Could he be the next to dethrone Sir Adrian Boult? Only time will tell.

Having listened to two other complete cycles: Boult's EMI and Haitink's EMI, right now I'm finding a lot of good in Previn's readings, although I haven't heard Handley's yet, but hopefully I will soon. A test piece for me to really tell how well a conductor does is VW's "A London Symphony." This piece is probably the one symphony by him I continue to come back to the most. I also love Symphony No. 5 and find Haitink's interpretation to be only slightly better than the Boult and Previn, but as with anything it all comes down to your own ears and how the music affects you.

This 6-disc collection is a must for all VW fans and I'm sure with repeated listens you will begin to fully appreciate what Previn and the great London Symphony Orchestra have accomplished. Happy listening.
