Music Review: Perhaps Ashkenazy's Finest Recording.

When I saw that one of the reviewers I most respect (though we frequently differ on recordings of the Romantic composers) loved this interpretation as well, I decided to submit my first review. This is in every way my favorite recording of ANY symphony by a Russian composer. I acquired it when it was first issued some 20 years ago, having exposure only to Rach's 2nd and 3rd symphonies at the time. I was simply blown away. First of all, the sonics are resplendent, hardly unusual for the near-perfectly engineered recordings of the Concertgebouw, and although I am much more a fan of Ashkenazy that the gentleman from Santa Fe, I have to concede that the quality of his interpretations are highly variable and always unpredictable. I was not prepared for the astonishing depth of this reading. What Ashkenazy achieves in the Rach. first symphony that I do not hear other conductors even attempt is a glorious, sustained presentation of the chant-like, mystical themes scattered throughout the symphony, finally erupting into a finale that can only be described as an exaltation. The conclusion is very measured, even elegant, and yet rapturous and blazingly triumphant - not a moment of trumped up histrionics, no tossed-off swift tempos, yet enormously exciting. Ashkenazy infuses the entire performance with an intense spirituality and nobility too seldom heard in performances of the great Russian symphonies. And I have come to regard this as the greatest of them all, its unpromising origins notwithstanding. For the curious listener who may not wish to buy the box of Ashkenazy recordings of the three symphonies, note the Amazon price of a used copy of just the first symphony. Hard to beat!
