Famous pianist Alexander Warenberg was approached and asked if he could remould Rachmaninov's Second Symphony into a piano work. Like any admirer of Rachmaninov's works, Warenberg apparently thought the idea 'impossible, even crazy' but reconsidered and decided it would be a worthwhile challenge, as the very thought of a "5th" piano concerto was too hard to resist.
In order to achieve this, to some, bizarre aim, he had to do some significant slash and burning, whilst still maintaining the all-important melodies and feel of the composer. The four symphonic movements have been condensed by some 40% into the regular three movement piano concerto form. Not only did Warenberg edit, he re-orchestrated sections, so the work is really a hybrid that is attributed to both Rachmaninov and Warenberg.
I couldn't resist buying this CD. It definitely has the feel of Rachmaninov and was endorsed by the Rachmaninov Estate and the score subsequently published by Boosey & Hawkes, which to all but the pickiest, legitimises the work.
As a lover of piano concertos in general, and Rachmaninov in particular, I am delighted with this 'new' work. On first listen, I had a couple of reservations, but these have long since gone with repeated playing. Highly recommended for any fan of Rachmaninov (listed on the CD as Rachmaninoff, a fact that may mean people browsing will not come across this disc).
