Music Review: Inspired Live Set

Charles Lloyd is a natural wonder of the musical world, a source of continual beauty and inspiration. He draws breath from life and breathes life into his instruments, his fellow musicians, and to those of us who have the blessing of hearing him play, whether in concert or in his many wonderful recordings. On this new ECM release, recorded in concert, he is joined by Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. As usual, even though he has a distinctive sound on tenor saxophone, alto flute, and tarogato (which sounds somewhat like an oboe), Lloyd gives plenty of opportunities for his fellow players to shine. Also as usual, the overall impression is that they are shining not to spotlight themselves, but to throw light upon the music so that all--musicians and listeners alike--might be illuminated.
When you listen to a Charles Lloyd performance, you hear not just jazz, nor even just music--you encounter truth, beauty, spirit, and life. You are lifted and humbled and inspired and blessed.

To celebrate his 70th birthday, (March 15th) Charles Lloyd presents his first live quartet album; a really exciting set of music recorded in Basel in 2007 featuring a revamped Quartet now with young stars Jason Moran on piano and Reuben Rogers on bass both making ECM debuts here. The latest offering is blisteringly up-tempo and sensually ballad-oriented and include also a beautiful cover of Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodr?guez s tune.General CDs
