Music reviews of UntitledMusic Review: R. Kelly - Untitled
R. Kelly is, and always will be my favorite R&B singer of all time period. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion about his personal life, i personally think since he was found innocent in all of the charges, people should leave him alone. But i know that being proven innocent isn't going to stop all the haters from hatin' on him, and unfortunately this whole incident is probably going to stick with him for the rest of his career. But with that said, it would absolutely ridiculous for anyone to say that R. Kelly isnt the king of R&B. The man is a musical genius, and nobody should even try to take that away from him. As far as R&B goes, R. Kelly has had the game on lock pretty much since he stepped on to the scene back in the early 90's. All of his solo albums are at least platinum, and most of them feature several hit singles...the man's music is timeless, most of it anyways. Yeah he has had a couple of low points in his career (Trapped In The Closet, and BOBW's 1 and 2), but for the most part, he has maintained relevance in the always changing music business for damn near 20 years now. He has sold 35 million records in the US, and has had 21 top 20 singles in the US, there is nobody even close to those numbers in terms of R&B (Besides Usher). All I'm saying is don't take this guy's music for granted, because he is one of a kind, and he deserves a lot more credit than what people have been giving him, and that its a shame that people are letting some scandal that technically was proven to be false outshine this man's classic music. But anyway on to Untitled...Untitled isn't a classic album, and it definitely is no where close to Trey Songz's Ready, but its still sitting pretty high on the list of R&B albums of the year. It's been a long time coming for this album. It was originally suppose to drop back in the summer of 08 under the title 12 Play: Fourth Quarter. But after all the singles for the album flopped (Does anyone even remember "Hairbraider" or "Skin""), and the entire album leaked, he decided to scrap the project and start something fresh. So here we are, December 1st of 2009, and Untitled has finally arrived after many pushbacks. Untitled definitely isn't R. Kelly's best album, but its definitely alot better than TP3 Reloaded and Double. It's easy to say that it's his best album since Chocolate Factory. But it's also by far his most experimental album. For the most part he keeps the song's in his signature baby making style, like the instant classic "Echo" where R. Kelly is heard yodeling on the mid-tempo bedroom anthem. And on the smooth "Bangin' The Headboard", we get to here more of the TP2 vibe again on this mellow babymaker. But where he switches it up this time the most is with the production and writing. Normally on all of R. Kelly's albums, he does 97% of the writing and producing, but on Untitled he decided to let some big names and new up and comers produce tracks for the album. Like on the very synth heavy mid tempo track produced by Los Da Mystro "Like I Do", where R. Kelly borrows some of The - Dream's style. And on the heart wrenching ballad "Elsewhere" produced by another up and comer Deep, R. Kelly delivers a phenomenal vocal performance that shows why he is one of the most talented musicians of our time. But there are some songs that do detract from the album as a whole. Like the way to poppy for R. Kelly "I Love The DJ" and "Text Me" is just flat out boring. And of course, as on every other R. Kelly album, he has to have at least a couple of club bangers, and on Untitled they come in the form of the smoker's anthem "Supaman High" and the bass heavy "Crazy Night", both of which are at least tolerable songs. And the funky "Be My # 2" was a song that at first i hated because i thought it sounded really corny, but after a couple listens it really grew on me and ended up being one of the better songs on the album, with its incredibly catchy hook. The best part in my opinion about Untitled is that R. Kelly has never sounded better vocally as he does on this album. His vocals are so smooth, and his transition from his normal singing voice to falsetto is almost perfect especially on "Echo" and the bouncy track "Exit". Overall, like i said Untitled isn't R. Kelly's best album, and it does kind of have a "thrown-together" feel to it, but its definitely a lot better than anything he has put out since Chocolate Factory, and that's good enough for me. R. Kelly's the King of R&B, and he will be until he retires. Period.
