Music Review: Trapped In His Closet

R. Kelly is one of the few great R&B kings alive (R.I.P. Luther Vandross, R.I.P. James Brown, R.I.P. Ray Charles). Although Kelly has been aiming towards rap tracks recently, he gets back to his roots on this album, sex, love & life. But Kelly doesn't go the full way, and misses out things that made his earlier albums so great. Kelly's last album was fun and produced in a chillout style, but didn't get as far as his others. I thought that R. needed a strong album to get back on the top and maintain that position forever. This album nearly hits the spot, but fails to please in some areas. Here's my opinion of TP3 Reloaded.
1) Playas's Only (Featuring The Game): 3/5 - The first track and first single is a club track and an average song. Scott Storch produced this, but I think Storch didn't really know what sound he was trying to make with this. Former G-Unit rapper Game is a guest on this track and he sounds like he's trying to remake his track "How We Do".
2) Happy Summertime (Featuring Snoop Dogg): 5/5 - This should definatly be the second single. This fits in perfectly with summer. It's a feel good r&b tune that is great to here when your on the beach. Classic Kel'!
3) Sex In The Kitchen: 4/5 - This track was going to be the first single originally, but didn't gain enough attention. I can't see this track blowing up, but it is a catchy, smooth r&b track.
4) Slow Wind: 4/5 - This is a nice track with a good instumental and nice vocals. This track is definatly another highlight.
5) Put My T-Shirt: 3/5 - The second track about sex on this album. It's okay, but I don't really like it much.
6) Remote Control: 2/5 - This song is way to long, boring and repeditive. It's got creative lyrics and it's soulful, but that's about it. The third song about sex.
7) Kickin' It With Your Girlfriend: 3/5 - This is a nice, average r&b tune. The fourth song about sex.
8) Reggae Bump Bump (Featuring Elephant Man) 3/5 - A catchy reggae influenced track featuring the sometimes annoying Elephant Man. It drowns on a bit too long.
9) Touchin' (Duet with Nivea): 4/5 - a great r&b ballad with Nivea. This is alot softer than the other Kelly/Nivea duet "Laundromat", but the lyrics are a bit more hardcore. This uses the same formula of "Sex In The Kitchen". 5th song about sex.
10) Girls Go Crazy (Featuring Baby): 2/5 - This is worse than "Playa's Only". This is a club track, but I think this is a bit of filler.
11) Hit It 'Till The Morning (Featuring Twista & Do Or Die): 4/5 - This track is a great song with a great catchy hook. This could be a potentual single if they cleaned it up a bit. 6th song about sex.
12) Sex Weed: 4.5/5 - A excellent r&b tune. Kelly's vocals are great and the lyrics are creative. It's just a shame its the 7th song on this album about sex.
13) (Sex) Love Is What We're Making: 3/5 - Sounds like another version of "Sex In The Kicthen", but not as good. This is where all the slow songs sound the same. Eighth song about sex.
14) Burn It Up (Featuring Wysen & Yindell): 4/5 - a hot reggaeton track. Should do well on mixtapes and in the club.
15) Trapped In The Closet (Chapters 1 to 5): 5/5 - A great story and a great mini movie to accompany it. I can't wait until to chapters 6-10. The whole bases of this song is sex. (No.9)
Overall this album is another average r&b album with some good tracks. Kelly and co. deliver some pretty hardcore lyrics. R. has always sung about sex, but the topic is getting tired now. He needs to write about something else, becuase when you have 9 songs dedicated to sex and constant references in every song, it shows that Kelly needs to broaden his writing skills. The best songs are Happy Summertime, Touchin', Sex Weed and the excellent Trapped In The Closet. The bonus DVD is a mini movie for Trapped In The Closet. If you are and always have been a Kelly fan, then pick this up. If you've only been a fan for a couple of years, give thi one a miss.

TP.3 Reloaded features a 5-part musical soap opera entitled "Trapped...In The Closet." In typical daring R. Kelly style he has experimented with the art of storytelling and lyrics to create something very unique.
