Music Review: Divided He Stands, Divided He Falls-- Soulful/Spiritual

Well, he has done it again. He has released a second double album, but this time he has done it in a completely different way. On this album, he shows us that he has 2 different sides and styles- being the smooth soul-man and a spiritual crooner. With the first disc, Happy People, he showcases some of the styles he did on his excellent 2003 effort, Chocolate Factory, from stepping music to jazz and smooth soul. The album starts out with the smooth, jazz-flavored, stepping cut, "Weatherman". The song, itself, is a great opener for the album. "Red Carpet (Pause, Flash)" is a slick, upbeat stepping number. "Love Signals" is a song about R. sending love signals to a girl and wants her to send it back. It's a old-school, smooth cut, but the lryics aren't polished that well. It's sung and composed great, though. "Love Street" finds R. in his most matured, romantic mood. He wants to find directions to "Love Street". The arrangement of the keyboards, bass, jazzy guitars, and horns are mixed well. "If" is one of my favorites from this album. On this song, R. tells a girl what he would do if they were together. The strings arrangement are top-notch. "The Greatest Show On Earth" is where R. decides to slow things down a little bit. On this song, R. asks some girls if they can step in the recording studio. He sings about what he would do on a date, which is "The Greatest Show On Earth", throughout this romantic night. The song really sounds like one of those Marvin Gaye-type tunes. It's definitely one of my favorites on this disc. "Steppin' Into Heaven" has a stong and powerful instrumentation, especially at the end of the song. Kelly arranged this song perfectly. "If I Could Make The World Dance" has a jazzy vibe in it. R. sings about if could make the whole world dance, everyone would fall in love, in a world where there's peace. At the end, he says that Marvin Gaye inspired him to write the song. "Happy People" beautifully ends the disc with its catchy 1970's-like rhythms and beats. The lryics are joyous and smooth. On this song, R. talks about how happy people make the world go around. This version, which clocks at 7:40, is probably better than that ordinary radio version. Just about at the end of the song, he says that he is going to change things with the album, and then he gets a group of people to repeat after him on the beginning statement of the booklet. "Happy People" is definitely a disc you'll going to play from beginning to end, but it gets kind of repetitive in some parts. To me, the "Happy People" disc is R. Kelly's ultimate collection of feel-good music, as well as stepping music.
Now, we are on the gospel-based, "U Saved Me". "U Saved Me" is the most diverse set of gospel music I've ever heard, but in some parts, just like "Happy People", it gets bland and repetitive. The opening track, "3 Way Phone Call", which features Kelly Price, Kim Burrel, and Maurice Mahon, R. is depressed and down, but when he confesses with Kelly Price about it, she gives him helpful advice with friends, Kim Burrel and Maurice Mahon to raise his spirits back up. It's a powerful tune. "U Saved Me", the title track, is probably the only song that will be considered as the highlight of this disc. On this song, R. sings about different situations on each verse and how God saved him. "Prayer Changes" is just like the previous song, "U Saved Me". On this one, he sings about how prayer changes him to a better person and he mixes that with introspective situations. "How Did You Manage" is about R. asking God Almighty how did he manage to keep loving and forgiving him, after all the wrong he has done. "The Diary Of Me" is like a little half of R.'s diary. "Spirit" is R.'s plea for God to guide his spirit to fulfilling happiness. The choir is so powerful. "Leap Of Faith" is probably the most powerful, uplifting song I've ever heard. He onece again thanks God for his leap of faith. "Peace" is a relaxed, jungle-like tune with R. praying for peace in the world. The jungle-like humming from the choir is very smoothed-out. Overall, "Happy People/U Saved Me" is one of the best works I've heard by R. Kelly in years, ever since his ambitious and far-reaching 1998 double-album, "R.". While the songs on the discs seem repetitive and bland, the whole album displays Kelly's ever-growing talents. The disc, "Happy People" is the best out of the two. I think that half of "U Saved Me" suffers from the boring and melodrama themes of certain songs. Sadly, "U Saved Me" won't get a lot of radio airplay like "Happy People". If you think you're going to find anything far-reaching or even diverse on this album, you're wrong. If you want that, invest in R. Kelly's 1998 album, "R."-his best album. "Happy People/U Saved Me" is an outstanding effort, though. A-
Description of Happy People / U Saved Me
KELLY R. HAPPY PEOPLER. Kelly is arguably one of R&B's most productive minds in years and the Chicago native creates music at a pace that few artists in any genre could keep up with. "Happy People/U Saved Me" serves as Kelly's own personal "Best of Both Worlds"--highlighting both the singer's love for stepping (a Midwest-based dance craze) and need for salvation. "Happy People" is the more upbeat of the two discs with Kelly taking on the persona of the Weatherman, a DJ on the fictional LOVE radio station. The album's title track and lead single is a perfect introduction to its infectious sound. Similarly, the midtempo groove of "Red Carpet (Pause, Flash)" will have stepping experts and novices headed straight to the dance floor. While the recurring stepping theme quickly becomes repetitive, you can't help but groove all the way through.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for "U Saved Me." The message-heavy disc sacrifices Kelly's raw talent for melodrama. Songs like "I Surrender" and "Prayer Changes," while expressing a sincere sentiment about believing in something greater than yourself, are a little overwhelming. That said, this disc's title track is a rousing musical tale of overcoming obstacles with the help of God--complete with a rising choir. In the end, "Happy People/U Saved Me," like most double albums, has both its highs and lows. --Rashaun Hall
