Music Review: "Up" Part 2

After a few challenging albums, it seems Reveal was billed as a return to REM's classic sound. Comparisons to U2's comback All That You Can't Leave Behind were raised. And when lead single "Imitation of Life" sounded like it came from 1991, the rumours of a back-to-basics album looked to be true. That expectation was dashed in about the first 10 seconds; as layers of strings and keyboards wash over the opening bars of "The Lifting", it's clear Reveal is essentially 'Up Part 2'. The production is slightly less overwhelming than on Up, and the album does sound a bit more like old-school REM. But there's still the same sense of being kept emotionally removed from the songs, and of the band speding too much time fiddling with songs that are best left alone.
Although they share similarities, Reveal does have a different feel to Up. Here, REM use the sunny pop of Out of Time as a template, which is at least better suited to the Wall Of Sound treatment they give the songs. Brian Wilson is an obvious influence on several tracks, and the album in general feels brighter and more optimistic than the sober Up. Some of the individual songs are stronger, helped no doubt by the slightly more organic sound. Lyrically, however, the album seems a bit lightweight (one criticism that could also be made of Out of Time), which is perhaps why keeping the listener emotionally at a distance doesn't matter as much as on Up.
In all, it's not quite the comeback REM seemed to be hoping for. The problems that plagued Up, and would plague Around the Sun, are present here. But there's enough of the traditional REM sound to partially compensate for this, and it's the best of the three art-pop albums they made.
Description of Reveal
R.E.M. have no right at this advanced stage in their career to be making such a spirited and beautiful album as Reveal. Twenty years after "Radio Free Europe," they're still jiggy as year-old pups. Reveal is the sound of a band that's beyond feeling the need to change or to prove themselves to each new generation, but retains its passion. Michael Stipe's voice is at its most evocatively beautiful on "I've Been High," and Peter Buck's eclectic tunes continue along the highly accessible vein mined on 1998's Up. Stipe continues his emergence as an up-front vocalist whose lyrics, if never entirely self-explanatory, now make ingenious use of more readily identifiable phrases, images, and vignettes. Hovering over much of the album is the spirit of Brian Wilson, whose genius is echoed in "Beachball" and almost transcended in the astonishingly plangent "Summer Turns to High." With so much to live up to, it's not far short of astonishing that R.E.M. can still come up with a song such as the gorgeously chiming and shimmering "Imitation of Life," which, on its own, is worth the price of admission. But, from the first synthesizer swirls of the opener "The Lifting" onward, there's nary a dud to be heard on Reveal. --Johnny BlackGeneral CDs
