Music Review: Cocktail Party Quincy

I love this CD. It's so reminiscent of the cocktail party music for those old movies from the late 50's and 60's with folks like Rock Hudson, Jack Lemmon, David Niven, Doris Day, Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, etc. Bossa Nova was THE MAJOR COCKTAIL PARTY music for films like Casino Royale (It helped to make "The Look of Love," as done by Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 so popular). Bossa Nova was king then, and this is a fabulous feel good nostalgia recording. This CD makes me want to throw a cocktail party! This treatment of bossa nova fits in perfectly with the musical culture of those days gone by. It's a time travel trip to the suburban set and penthouse parties in Manhattan. It's soothing, calm, and simply . . . Quincy does Bossa Nova in the early 60's. Got to go . . . it's martini time.

Japanese limited edition reissue of 1962 album pressed onto 180 gram vinyl. Mercury. 2005.Even when he was a full-time jazz cat, Quincy Jones always had an ear for the pop aesthetic. This 1962 record does contain a good bit of, how you say, queijo in its unsubtle arrangements, but it is for the most part an accessible, entertaining, and bubbly affair. And with musicians of the caliber of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Jim Hall (who can't help but be tasteful), and Phil Woods all contributing ideas, a baseline quality is assured. Most significantly, Jones goes beyond the expected Jobim and Bonfa cuts to fit Lerner & Loewe and even Mingus into bossa nova's bright clothes. --Marc Greilsamer
