Operation: Mindcrime(1988). Queensryche's Fourth Album.
After the releases of 'Rage For Order' and 'The Warning', Queensryche headed back to the studios to create what would soon become their masterwork, 'Operation: Mindcrime'. Hiring Todd Rungedren(of Rush fame), Geoff Tate envisioned a concept album, based around the story of a fortune hunter whose disillusionment with Reagan-era American society leads him to join a shadowy plot to assassinate corrupt leaders. Unlike their previous two records, Queensryche decided to use a more Prog Metal approach, with their main influence being Iron Maiden. 'Operation: Mindcrime' is a gritty, dark, and haunting album, and it works well with Noir Films or 'Goodfellas'. Upon its release, 'Operation: Mindcrime' breached the Top 40, and it eventually stayed on the charts for over a year, certifying it Platinum. While no hit singles emerged, "Eyes Of A Stranger" received fair airplay from MTV, and it would set the stage for the breakout success of 'Empire' and the single "Silent Lucidity". So, is 'Operation: Mindcrime' an over-ambitious concept album, or a beautiful Prog Metal Masterpiece? Read on to find out!
Track Ratings-
I Remember Now- "I Remember Now" introduces you to our main character.
Anarchy X- "Anarchy X" is a short-lived intro to "Revolution Calling", but for an instrumental, the feeling of revolt and the excellent guitar solo make this a superb track!
Revolution Calling- "Revolution Calling" takes over from "Anarchy X", slowing down for an intense buildup, where 'Ryche's chugging guitar molds into Tate's sarcastic vocals, which fully bloom in the excellent chorus, which will have you banging your head undoubtedly! An awesome Heavy Metal rocker that makes you want to revolt!
Operation: Mindcrime- "Operation: Mindcrime" presents itself as a dark and haunting look at the Goverment's deception, and Degarmo/Wilton's(I will refer to them as "The Duo" henceforth) doomy riff behind Tate's sadistic vocals, not to mention a killer chorus and solo(s) make the title track and excellent Prog Rocker!
Speak- "Speak" starts off with "The Duo"'s duel guitar attack, and it builds up to Tate's vocals, which are obviously trying to sound like Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. A dark, melodic, Heavy Metal masterpiece, with absolutely stunning lyrics and musicianship!
Spreading The Disease- NOT THE ANTHRAX SONG! "Spreading The Disease" is a scathing look at the media, and the pessimistic vocals and lyrics show why. "The Duo"'s guitarwork is surprisingly harmonic and upbeat, which properly complement the song's dark undertones. Bliss!
The Mission- "The Mission" is a ballad along the lines of Metallica's "Fade To Black", with somber, moving vocals courtesy Tate and a innocent guitar riff, but it picks up midway through, and gets heavier towards the end after a beautiful guitar solo. I'm Lovin' It!
Suite Sister Mary- "Suite Sister Mary" is "Operation: Mindcrime"'s epic, a 10 minute long Prog Rock masterpiece that goes from heavy to slow, almost in a heartbeat. Throughout, Tate's creepy vocals, haunting monks' chanting, and a sinister(but slow) guitar riff enthrall the listener the entire way through!
The Needle Lies- "The Needle Lies" echoes back to Judas Priest influences, with "The Duo"'s duel guitar attack and Tate's Halford-esque vocals warning all that 'the needle lies' throughout. Magnificent interplay between "The Duo" makes "The Needle Lies" a dark, heavy rocker in the vein of classic Judas Priest.
Electric Requeium- A REALLY dark, scary, filler track that would fit well with murdering your best friend. A frightening track with an excellent guitar solo!
Breaking The Silence- "Breaking The Silence" is Queensryche at their most Glam/Hair Metal, and the end result sounds a little something like Dokken. "The Duo"'s chugging guitar riff and Tate's light, optimistic vocals truly build up to the stellar Glam Metal-y chorus, which, unless you're dead, will having you banging your head!
I Don't Believe In Love- "I Don't Believe In Love" is a Power Metal Ballad, much like fellow rockers The Scorpions did. "The Duo"'s light, easy-going riff and Tate's moody vocals truly stand out when they pick up for the addictive chorus, where each shows a flair that only the 'Ryche can get! Excellent solo, excellent song!
Waiting For 22- A Touching filler track, much like Randy Rhoad's "Dee", with a short but sweet guitar solo.
My Empty Room- An intro to "Eyes Of A Stranger".
Eyes Of A Stranger- "Eyes Of A Stranger" blossoms from the start with a killer guitar solo, but soon turns into a ballad featuring beautiful, symphonic vocals from Tate. "Eyes Of A Stranger" is a magnificent Power Metal Ballad, featuring an addictive chorus and magnificent guitarwork.
Recently in 2003, Queensryche's catalogue was remastered, featuring 24 Bit Digital Sound and Extra Tracks! On 'Operation: Mindcrime", you get to Live takes on "The Mission" and "My Empty Room", and they both never fail to amaze! This is just icing on the cake!
Overall, 'Operation: Mindcrime" is much more than I expected, and definitely now is one of my favorite CDs. I can't stress enough how well "The Duo"'s amazing duel guitar attack and solos work, being beautiful, symphonic, and far-reaching at the same time, much like Geoff Tate's vocals. I LOVED EVERY TRACK, and even the filler was a good listen! Progressive and Heavy Metal never sounded better!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! A MAGNIFICENT CD FOR FANS OF HEAVY METAL, PROGRESSIVE ROCK, AND QUEENSRYCHE! FROM BEGINNING TO END, A MASTERPIECE!
Killer Kuts- "Suite Sister Mary", "Revolution Calling","The Mission", and "Breaking The Silence".

Description of Operation: MindcrimeQueensryche's "Operation:mindcrime" Deluxe Edition features the original album tracklist plus bonus live tracks and a previously unreleased live performance of the entire "mindcrime" album recorded at Hammersmith Odeon, London, England on November 15, 1990. Also includes the "Video:mindcrime" DVD (previously available on VHS only) with two new previously unreleased bonus clips. Packaged in four panel deluxe DigiPak with 24-page booklet and special slipcase. Long dubbed "the thinking man's metal band," Queensryche have always been difficult to classify; somewhere between Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd. Mindcrime was their breakthrough album, garnering the band commercial and critical success. Arguably their best release, this is a complex, ambitious effort, with top-notch music and a complicated storyline (a disillusioned fortune hunter of the Reagan era joins an underground movement to assassinate political scumbags) that flows smoothly from start to finish. The combination of experimental, progressive music with shorter, more radio-friendly songs works well, and enabled the band to release singles from the album while keeping the story intact. These shorter songs provide the album's most exciting moments; "Revolution Calling," "Eyes of a Stranger," and "I Don't Believe in Love" are some of the best metal songs out there. --Genevieve Williams
